It’s hard to believe a house without a kettle. It’s a kitchen staple that’s used for so many different things, but it turns out, Americans have no idea what they are.
Love Island Australia host Sophie Monk was equally as baffled as us when she approached a number of shop assistants in America hoping to locate a kettle, only to be turned down time and time again.
The Aussie star spent 10 years in the US before returning home to Australia in 2015.
Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle Australia, Monk recalled the hilarious story, saying she was left dumbfounded when she discovered Americans boil their water on the stove.
She said, “I was looking for a kettle, and they’re like (imitates a US accent), ‘Kettle?’” They don’t know what a kettle is!”
“They don’t use them. They must heat water up on their stove. Yeah, no one has a kettle, which is crazy.”
While the concept can sound quite foreign to those outside of the US, there is actually a valid explanation behind it.
Homes in America only have a voltage of 100 to 127, while Australia has voltages of 220 to 240 volts.
To explain in layman terms, electric kettles in the US won’t heat water as quickly as they do Down Under due to the low voltage.
This isn’t the first time the kettle debate has been brought up, with Reddit having an entire thread dedicate towards it.
Wait until people find out some Americans boil their water in the microwave…
