Today is Sex Toy Day — yes, it’s a thing — so we’re taking a moment to reflect on just how far we’ve come with conversations around self-pleasure and sexual wellness.

Sex positive conversations and media are only a really recent thing. When I think back to the beginning of my sexually active life — which was less than a decade ago — we were so far away from being able to talk about sex and enjoying sex openly, especially as women.

“Sex toys are a great way to enhance sexual experiences, whether that’s during solo or couple play,” Lovehoney‘s Sexologist Chantelle Otten tells POPSUGAR AU.

“More Aussies are now beginning to understand the importance of pleasure and sexual wellness for their health, both mental and physical.”

According to Lovehoney research, the majority of Australians (86.8%) agree that masturbation is good for mental health and 40% of Australians say they feel happier when they are sexually satisfied.

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing quite like some solo-sexy time on a bad day to bring you back to life. Not only is it a mood booster, but experimenting with your own pleasure allows you to understand your body better, which ultimately gives you more confidence, overall.

“Sexual activities have many health benefits such as stress relief, endorphin production, sleep aid and a release of tension,” adds Chantelle.
