“It Was Horrible” Ryan Moloney Criticises the Logies Over Neighbours Tribute
It seems the Logies drama never ends. The award ceremony, which celebrates the best in Australian television, has been plagued with controversy.
From Lisa Wilkinson’s acceptance speech causing legal ramifications, to Julia Morris’s cringe-worthy opening number, Australian TV’s night of nights didn’t go according to plan. Now, Neighbours star Ryan ‘Toadie’ Moloney has slammed producers for disrespecting the TV soap which ran for 37 years.
The actor has come forward and claimed the Logie Awards could have done a lot more to honour the show, which announced its cancellation in March of this year.
Producers of the ceremony put together a montage to mark the end of the iconic Aussie drama, but Moloney said it didn’t hit the mark.
“In all honesty, it was incredibly disappointing the package that they put together,” Moloney told 2Day FM’s breakfast team Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, Erin Molan and Ed Kavalee.
“I kind of watched it and thought, ‘oh ok so Neighbours has just been summed up by a whole lot of food being dumped on people’s heads.”
He added: “I think probably the least they could do is get us to say something. It has been a massive … we are in the bloody Hall of Fame. If this is how you treat people, a show that is in the hall of fame, then good luck to the Logies really.”
The 42-year-old was joined by his fellow Neighbours cast at the Logies, which took place at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on Sunday, June 19. He has played Jarrod ‘Toadfish’ Rebecchi on the soap since 1995.
The final episode of Neighbours is set to air on Channel 10 on August 1, and will see major stars such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce make an appearance.
“Mate it was horrible,” he said.
“Our table was stuck behind the cameras so we couldn’t even see the stage. The competition winners had a better table than us. That’s when I figured we weren’t getting a gig.
“These are household names, people everyone has grown up with, the Logies are partly what they are because of shows like Neighbours.”
Former Neighbours actors Daniel Macpherson and Natalie Bassingthwaighte came on stage to present the small reel, which was comprised of clips from the show.
“If this is any indication, the Home and Away cast came over afterwards and told us how sorry they were that that’s what we got,” Moloney said.
“Maybe I should join the cast of Home and Away.”
