There’s no better place in the world to see what’ll be trending this spring in Australia than European summer, which is exactly two seasons ahead of us. I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks there, basking in the sun, so ahead, are the trends I saw and predict will be everywhere in Aus come September.
Here are my top predictions:
Crochet Knit Dresses
Crochet dresses make the perfect beach-to-bar outfit. After a dip in the pool, you can slip a crochet dress with a pair of sandals, as a chic overlay to your swimwear. They’re also super versatile and make for a great day-to-night transition piece.
What I’m loving right now:
Matinee Crochet Dress ($159)
AERE Crochet Dress ($42)
AERE Crochet Maxi ($140)
Rue Stiic Maxi Dress ($93)
Chunky Slides
If you’re on the shorter side like me, chunky slides are an absolute must. It’s another great versatile piece to own that you can throw on with a pair of shorts, flowy pants, or dresses. The ‘IT’ investment sandals that were EVERYWHERE in Europe were these Jill Sander padded platform sandals. We’ve gone from the Chanel Grandpa to these. I think the dupes will definitely come around soon, with LTK creators styling the look on their shopfronts in no time.
What I’m loving right now:
Jil Sander Platforms ($781)
ASOS Platforms ($131)
Tony Bianco Platforms ($179.95)
ALIAS Mae Sandals ($219.95)
Atmos & Here Sandals ($46.80)
Small Handbags
Smaller handbags are a great piece to add when you don’t want anything overshadowing your outfit. I’m carrying my small handbag everywhere with me — around Europe and back here in Australia, to work.
Small bags are big enough to carry the essentials (phone, wallet, keys) and they’re practical pieces to carry while you’re prancing around the city. From the re-issue of the Balenciaga La Cagole bags to small bags from The Row and most labels selling dupes of these designer micro bags.
This is what I’m loving:
Balenciaga Le Cagole ($1,950)
Oroton Cinder ($379)
Staud Kaia Bag ($357.88)
Tank Tops
Tank tops are your best travel buddies. Not only are they easy to pack, but they’re also easy to layer and come in a range of fun colours. Tanks are probably the most versatile of all trends this coming spring. You can even wear them now in winter with jeans and an overcoat. In spring, team a simple tank with shorts or even a skirt. Find them from every brand, from Loewe to Cotton On.
This is what I’m loving:
Loewe Tank ($515)
Venroy Tank ($100)
Cotton On Tank ($19.99)
Aviator Sunglasses
Sunglasses are a summer essential, whether you’re using them to shield your eyes from the European sun as you visit the best tourist attractions or helping you keep cool during a long lunch. Aviators are a great pick as their light frame means they’ll go with most outfits. We went through the aviator sunglass trend a few years ago, and I didn’t think I’d see them again for a while, but if European summer fashion is anything to go by, they’ve made a major comeback. From metal to acetate frames, you can’t go wrong with a pair of aviators this spring. They’re cute AND practical.
This is what I’m loving:
Ray-Ban ($275)
Cotton On ($19.99)
Banbe Eyewear ($79.95)
