Demi Lovato's Split From Max Ehrich Helped Her Embrace Her Sexuality: “I Felt This Sense of Relief”
Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich may have split in September 2020, but the 28-year-old finally seems ready to open up about their breakup. Demi recently spoke to Glamour about how ending her engagement to Max helped her embrace her sexuality. “When I started getting older, I started realising how queer I really am,” she said. “This past year, I was engaged to a man, and when it didn’t work, I was like, ‘This is a huge sign.’ I thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.” She also added that she feels “too queer” to be with a cis man. Demi continued, “I hooked up with a girl and was like, ‘I like this a lot more.’ It felt better. It felt right.”
When news of the couple’s split first broke, things initially seemed mutual, but People later revealed the alleged reason behind the breakup. “It was very hurtful to Demi when she realised that Max’s intentions weren’t genuine,” a source told the publication. “Breaking off the engagement was not an easy decision.” According to the insider, their relationship began to change after Max headed to Atlanta to film a movie. “Max shot up in fame,” the source said. “He got wrapped up in [Hollywood].”
Demi and Max began dating in March 2020 before getting engaged four months later, but eventually split in September 2020. “It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers,” a source told People. “They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together.”
Shortly after the breakup, Demi released the self-love anthem “Still Have Me.” The song seemingly addresses the struggles Demi has gone through since her public breakup. Max, on the other hand, has spoken out about the end of their relationship a number of times, including taking to his Instagram stories to say he first learned about it from the People announcement.
