Is a £155 Serum Made From Leftover Tomatoes Worth It? This Editor Tried It

As a beauty editor I get sent a lot of products to try – although I attempt to test as many as I can, there are some which spark my interest more than others. Often it will be an impressive claim or stand out ingredient, but other times it’s the founder. Launching a beauty brand is one thing, but putting your name to a brand is quite different. Which is why I was really intrigued when I started to read about Amy Roe, founder of Byroe skincare, a sustainable skincare range which uses natural, superfood ingredients to achieve results. Furthermore, Amy was raised in South Korea, and if you know your beauty this has probably pricked your ears already as K Beauty has been one of the driving forces of innovation in the skincare market over the last 10 years. Roe studied at Columbia University in New York – whilst obtaining her Ivy League education she started a business exporting Korean beauty products to China and her passion for the industry began to grow.

In particular I liked the sound of its Tomato Firming Serum (£155), one because I am partial to a tomato, but also because it is not an ingredient I have seen used a lot. I’m well aware of the benefits of this fruit as an antioxidant and how lycopene, found in tomatoes has been proven to improve heart health and even prevent cancer, but not for its firming powers. I’m also intrigued by any serum which has a price tag of £155, yet is made from leftover food waste – the real like example of one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

So is it any good or is it just a marketing tool? I had to try it out to see for myself.

A little goes a long way and I find one pump is enough to cover the whole of face. I used it in the morning, after cleansing and my skin felt so hydrated I almost forgot to add moisturisers. It is a gel-like texture that glides on to the skin and gives it really soft sheen. I tend to let it absorb for a few minutes before adding any further products, although even after 10 minutes I don’t feel like my skin desperately needs any additional hydration. I have noticed my makeup seems to last longer if I am wearing this serum, which I really like as sometimes target serums can peel under makeup. The serum has a slight orange tinge, which gives skin a nice glow, ideal for non-makeup wearing days too.

In terms of firming results, this is always a bit of a hard claim for me to quantify as you would need to use the product for months and then allow your skin to go through numerous skin cycles to really see a visible firming difference at a deeper level. However, I really noticed how smooth and hydrated my skin felt, which in turn makes skin appear firmer as it has more elasticity and doesn’t look saggy. I also looked forward to using it, which may sound like a frivilous point, but as far as I am concerned when it comes to skincare, the more inclined we are to use a product or a tool the more often we will use it – and consistency is key when it comes to seeing real results.

How to Use Byroe Tomato Firming Serum?

This serum can be used in the morning or night, both if you prefer. It should always be applied to clean skin, otherwise it is just a waste of product and money as the dirt and grime sitting on the surface of your skin will prevent it from absorbing and getting any goodness in. I tend to use it in the morning as I like to pack my AM routine with antioxidants, like the ones found in tomatoes, as this offers protection against free radicals and environmental factors, and then use hard hitting ingredients like retinols in the evening giving it time to absorb and get to work.

What to Consider Before Trying Byroe Tomato Firming Serum

Obviously it is the price tag. I will never tell anyone they need a £155 serum as this is just not reality. However, I will also ask people why they are more obliged to fill their face with injectables that only last a few months than seriously invest in innovative skincare, particularly if you advocate for sustainable, waste-conscious options. From my estimates this serum would last the majority of users at least three months and more like six months. Also consider that it is made from natural ingredients and it has a life span of 12 months, which is quite good for this category of products.

As you can see my skin looks plumper and smoother with just the serum. I like how my skin appears hydrated without the additional products or ingredients too, which means I can cut down the amount I’m using each day.
