The Latest E-Girl Aesthetic Trending on TikTok? Say Hello to ‘Hair Horns’

The hacks and trends that are spawned from the creative minds of TikTok users can be pretty wild. The video-sharing app has given us ponytail hacks, baked feta pasta and sunscreen contouring (don’t try it). And now, the latest trend to sweep the app is an update to the E-girl aesthetic.

If you’re not familiar, according to Fandom, the electronic girl (most often called E-girl) “is a type of feminine alternative aesthetic similar to Pastel Goth or Plant Mom. Although the term E-Girl was coined to describe a type of girl who uses the TikTok app, the fashion sense of an E-Girl dates back to around 2013 / 2014 Tumblr“.

This aesthetic usually manifests in a very specific appearance consisting of striped shirts and fishnet stockings beneath ripped jeans, while on the hair and makeup front, E-girl’s generally opt for bold winged eyeliner, blush on the nose and small doodles, like hearts or stars, beneath the eyes. E-girl’s also usually style their hair in pigtails and experiment with dyeing their hair a number of different colours.

According to Dazed Beauty, the latest update to the E-girl aesthetic is hair horns. To achieve this, E-girl’s are cutting a small section of the top layer of their hair, then using hair tools and mousse to make the hair stand up off their heads — much like devil horns. When styled into horns, it makes quite the impact but the hair can also be smoothed down, making it pretty versatile.

Singer-songwriter Allison Ponthier recently cut horns into her hair, bringing the idea into the TikTok sphere. “My client, Allison Ponthier, whom I’ve been cutting for years, came up with the initial idea and I was game,” Mischa G., a stylist and owner of the salon Treehouse Social Club, told Dazed Beauty. “We collaborated on the whole process. It was the most fun I’ve had doing a cut in a while – this is definitely a Tiktok trend I can stand behind.”

According to Mischa, the beauty of hair horns is that they are a “built-in accessory that looks super cute, but if the horns aren’t styled, they can blend it with their layers.”

While Ponthier had her horns professionally cut into her hair, TikTok users are taking matters into their own hands and doing the snipping themselves, such as Callianna aka @bloodypinecone on TikTok. To achieve the same look yourself, you literally just need scissors, mousse and a straightener.
