Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, has been known for her luscious locks since she arrived on the royal scene in 2001. Indeed, her glossy chestnut waves have outshone all kinds of royal drama, and arguably her bulletproof blowdry deserves it’s own The Crown length series. Given Netflix hasn’t answered our wishes, we’ve set out to answer the question once and for all – how does Kate achieve her #flawless signature, bouncy style, and what products does she use? Here’s everything we know about Kate Middleton’s hair and some tips on achieving her look all by yourself.
Step One: Invest In a Good Haircut
Your haircut provides the foundation for your hair look, so it’s worth finding a great stylist, and investing in a good cut. Kate’s hair is cut into long layers that add movement and dimension. Bring some photos and ask your stylist for a similar cut. It will make it far easier to achieve that iconic “Kate Middleton” look.
Step Two: Take Care of Your Hair
Kate’s hair always looks healthy and shiny, so make sure to use high-quality products and get regular trims to maintain the health of your hair. Start with clean, well-conditioned hair. Kate is known for her shiny, healthy-looking locks, so use a high-quality shampoo and conditioner. Kate Middleton’s use of Kérastase Nutritive Bain Satin Shampoo ($54) and Nutritive Lait Vital Conditioner, is well documented. The smoothing, nourishing duo leave Kate’s blow wave glossy and weightless.
Step 3: Protect Your Hair While Heat-Styling
Use a heat protectant spray before styling your hair with hot tools. This will help to prevent damage and keep your hair looking healthy.
Kate Middleton is a fan of the Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom cream, but that bad boy is sadly discontinued. If you’re looking for high shine, I recommend the ColorWow, Dream Coat Supernatural Styling Spray ($61). It’s a powerful heat protection that locks in shine without adding weight to the hair – important because Kate’s hair is voluminous as all get out. Brush through a plastic bristled brush, Tangle Angel 2.0, Soft Touch Brush ($32) was designed by Kate’s hairstylist Richard Ward. Not only will it look gorgeous on your vanity, but the anti-static won’t tear at wet hair, causing breakage and flyaways (a phenomenon we have never spotted on Kate Middleton).
4. A Thorough Blowdry Is Key
Now, for the most important step. Blow-dry your hair using a round brush to create volume and a smooth finish. If you’re blessed with thick hair like Kate, consider sectioning your hair with Brioego Grip & Clip Alligator Hair Clips ($25). Working in smaller sections ensures your hair is totally dry, which is key to a long-lasting hair look. A powerful blow dryer and a good round brush will work wonders here. We love the ghd, Helios Blow Dryer (currently on sale for $268), or if you’re feeling spendy, the award-winning Dyson Airwrap. Use a decent ceramic brush, we love the Drybar, Double Pint Large Round Ceramic Brush ($68), for a smooth finish with plenty of volume
5. Add Some Waves
Use a curling iron or wand to create loose waves or curls. Take small sections of hair and wrap them around the barrel, holding for a few seconds before releasing.
For super voluminous curls like Kate’s, you may want to consider a triple barrel curler like the Mermaid, Interchangeable Style Wand ($169). It gives you the option of creating 25 through to 32mm curls and creates long-lasting, shiny curls with its ionic ceramic wands.
Gently brush through your curls with a wide-tooth comb to ensure you don’t end up with a “Toddlers and Tiaras” pageant queen look. For a wide-toothed detangling comb that leaves your locks polished, look no further than the Dyson Detangling Comb, ($19) for less than $20.
6. Set With Hairspray
Kate Middleton is a busy woman. Have you noticed that her soft waves never drop? We have and we’re full of envy. Kate is a fan of L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Normal Strength Hairspray, ($10). It’s lighter hold than some of the other hairsprays in the L’Oreal range, with a super fine mist that doesn’t weigh hair down, or leave it crunchy.
7. Customise Your Routine For Your Hair Type
Remember that everyone’s hair is different, so what works for Kate may not work for you. Experiment with different products and techniques to find the best ways to achieve a similar hairstyle that works for you.
And there you have it! With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to achieving Kate Middleton’s perfect mane. Now all you have to do is rock your royal look!
