Neon Hair Coming Back Is Peak 2010s Behavior
Say goodbye to the minimalist aesthetic. Award season is typically when the general public gets to see some of Hollywood’s biggest stars experiment with their looks, and the most recent red carpets have made one thing clear: neon hair is back and better than ever.
A few months ago, Billie Eilish dyed her bangs a cherry red color before ultimately going for a bolder, black-and-red ombré look at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards. Erika Alexander walked that same carpet with a gorgeous high-bun hairstyle that saw her box braids in a colorful rainbow of bold pink, blue, yellow, and orange shades. Kylie Jenner even showed off a bright pink transformation on TikTok a few days into the new year.
“Bold hair colors are trending because people, in general, are up for having more fun and enjoying new experiences these days,” Devin Toth, a hairstylist at NYC’s Salon SCK, tells POPSUGAR. He’s not wrong. If you go on TikTok right now, you’ll see countless users lamenting about the days of doing a full glam – bold eyeshadow, big curls, highlights you can see from outer space. It’s no coincidence that these can’t-miss hair colors are back with a vengeance.
As for the exact shades of neon that are trending, there are a few that you should keep your eye on. “I’m seeing more smoky blues and cherry colas,” Toth says. “Bright copper tones are also becoming really popular right now, especially for highlights.”
