A sign of a great perfume is when people stop you on the street to ask what you’re wearing. That was the case when creator Jess Poulter (@thesuitelifeofjessy) wore the scent Neon Neroli by Australian brand Vahy, Poulter shared in a TikTok last year.

Now the brand has added to its collection with a scent two years in the making: Flower Pistil, which comes in full size ($240) and travel spray ($55). Described as “floral with a side of thorns”, it features springtime bloom scents of iris, candied violet and lily of the valley tempered by sugar and caramelised amber and edged with musk and sandalwood. When sprayed onto the skin, the scent lasts for over six hours.

“My inspiration for Flower Pistil was a garden of Florence called Boboli Garden,” Vahy’s master perfumer says. “In particular, a small part of it, The Knight’s Casino, located at the top of the small hill. This garden overlooks the Pitti Palace, the city of Florence and opens onto the Tuscan countryside.”

To recreate the garden, the perfumer played with notes of iris Florentina, rose, peony and lemon. Like other scents from the Vahy range, this perfume uses 100% natural ingredients that are traceable and biodegradable. It’s vegan, cruelty-free and made in Australia.

“We’ve got nothing to hide, so we disclose our ingredients and don’t use umbrella terms like ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’,” reads Vahy’s website.

The brand was founded in 2020 by Melbourne-based, life-long friends Anna Weatherlake and Kate Macdonald. The two saw a gap in the market for a fragrance with 100% natural ingredients but that still offered a sophisticated scent.

Many fragrances they found used synthetic ingredients with harmful petrochemicals, and those that were natural, didn’t smell great. Since launching, the brand has placed in 14 international fragrance awards and placed as a finalist in the internationally coveted Glossy Beauty Awards in 2023.

“This thrilling scent dances in both shadow and light, in an unexpected symphony of springtime florals, tempered with deliciously sweet sugar and oozing amber,” says Weatherlake. “Flower Pistil is so divine, we fully anticipate it to quickly become one of our best-selling scents in the range. But buyers beware, this is not your ordinary floral.”
