The “Praise This” Cast’s Singing Skills Are Very Real
The gospel movie genre is back with the release of “Praise This.” The film, which premiered on Peacock on April 7, stars Chlöe as a young woman named Sam who dreams of becoming a singer. After moving to Atlanta and joining her cousin Jess’s struggling praise team, Sam goes on a mission to transform the group in hopes of winning the national championship competition and turning her dreams of stardom into a reality.
Throughout the film, we see Jess’s praise team flourish with every performance. Of course, each member has their own strengths, and in real life, the cast are just as talented. So talented, in fact, that everyone who can sing spectacularly in real life doesn’t actually do so in the movie.

In an April 5 interview with Critqal, Washington said the entire cast went through boot-camp training in order to prepare for their roles. While others primarily focused on singing and dancing, she also had to learn how to play an instrument.
“I had three weeks of drum training before we shot that scene of me on the drums. It was me the whole time, by the way. There was no double. No hands. I don’t play any other instruments, so I was really excited that I got to do that.”

Gordon explained she had to figure out when it was appropriate for the characters to go all out with their performances. “Every song would come out sounding amazing and sometimes you don’t need that,” she said. “Sometimes you need it to be a moment that serves the story.”
