Big Brother Australia celebrated its 21st birthday not too long ago, but sadly, that may be where its journey ends.
So Dramatic! has reported that Channel 7 have axed the reality series after it saw poor ratings this year.
Big Brother may be watching, but I guess no one else was.
“The new head of reality TV at Channel 7 cancelled it,” a source told the podcast. “Endemol [production company] was already in production and already coming up with ideas.”
“They have already purchased the licensing rights for next year, and they are still not commissioning it even though they’ve forked out big to licence it,” they added. “So, they’ve wasted millions and millions.”
This year, Big Brother Royalty vs New Contenders was expected to be a major success; however, it just couldn’t compete with Channel 10’s MasterChef Australia.
Only 582,000 people tuned in to watch Reggie Bird win the competition a second time, compared to the 1.171 million people who watched the MasterChef Australia finale on the same night.
This year, Big Brother chose to bring back former contestants to help revive the show, but it didn’t attract viewers the way the network expected it to.
Hopefully, the numbers serve as a wake-up call for producers, and they decide to return to the old format instead.
It’s important to note that Channel 7 have not addressed the alleged axing, and who really knows how reliable this “source” actually is.
