Finally! Bridgerton Season 2 Has a Release Date
We love to see it! Or, rather, we will love to see it, when Bridgerton season two drops next year.
Before Squid Game, Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton smashed Netflix’s records and is currently the streaming platform’s second most-watched series of all time.
What Will Season 2 of Bridgerton Be About?
If you’re looking forward to getting a second dose of Simon and Daphne when Bridgerton returns, we’re so sorry to be the ones to inform you that it’s simply not going to happen. In fact, Rege-Jean Page — who played Simon in season one — is apparently not in season two at all.
Meanwhile, Phoebe Dynevor — who plays Daphne — will be taking a major back seat for season two. Dynevor’s character will instead be around as a supporting cast member as the focus of the show shifts.
Instead, Bridgerton will pivot, and focus on Lord Anthony as he tries to find a “suitable” wife.
Rhimes explained that instead of continuing to follow Daphne and Simon, “every season we’re telling a different romance story of a different couple”.
“There are eight Bridgerton siblings, and as far as I’m concerned, there are eight ‘Bridgerton’ seasons. And maybe more,” she said.
Of the upcoming season, Rhimes hopes the audience will respond with the same intensity as they did for season one.
“I think there’s a powerful, interesting, romantic couple at the heart of it,” she said. “They’re an incredibly interesting and exciting pair. I like to watch them. Our goal, if we do our job correctly, is you are going to be as invested and excited by that couple as you were by the couple of season one.”
Why Aren’t Simon and Daphne the Focus of Bridgerton Season 2?
Basically? Because that’s just how romance novels are, baby! The couple gets their happily ever after, and that’s that.
In fact, when the internet went into meltdown at the announcement that Page would not be returning for the second season, Rhimes was surprised.
Speaking to Variety, she said that she didn’t expect people to have “such a reaction to it”.
“My assumption of what people knew of romance novels was … I overestimated a great deal,” she added.
In fact, the response was so intense that Rhimes actually did reach out to Page to see if he was interested in returning to the show, an offer that Page turned down.
“Rightfully, he said, ‘I signed up to do this one lovely story, this closed-ended storyline. I’m good!’” Rhimes said. “And I don’t blame him for that. I think that he was really smart to leave the perfection as the perfection.”
It was an answer Rhimes was happy about, saying: “For once in television, [they’re] going to get to have their happily ever after versus — well, you know! In network television, you have to come up with 15 years of why a couple has to be apart.”
When Will Bridgerton Season 2 Premiere?
The second season of Bridgerton will drop on Netflix on Friday, March 25, 2022, so make sure you clear your calendar for the weekend!
