We just got our first look at Apple TV+’s new Godzilla series. Titled “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” the series takes place in the aftermath of a battle between Godzilla and the Titans that levels San Francisco (as seen in 2014’s “Godzilla” film). The series follows two siblings who follow in their father’s footsteps to uncover their connection of the secretive Monarch organization. At the center of the mystery is Army officer Lee Shaw – and in a fun twist, Kurt Russell plays him in the present day while his son Wyatt Russell plays him in the 1950s. The series marks the first time Wyatt and Kurt have worked on the same project since Wyatt appeared as a younger version of his dad in the 1998 movie “Soldier.”
Apple described the series as a “dramatic” saga that spans three generations, and on Aug. 17 they released first-look images for the show. The series was co-developed by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, who worked on Marvel’s “Hawkeye.” “WandaVision” director Matt Shakman will direct the first two episodes.
“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” is the newest entry in Legendary Entertainment’s Monsterverse, which started with 2014’s “Godzilla.” Three other films have followed so far: 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island,” 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” and 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong.” Another sequel is in the works, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” which is scheduled to be released next year. “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” doesn’t have an official release date yet, but is expected this fall.
