Grab your popcorn, the most anticipated airing of dysfunctional family grievances is about to begin as the first instalment of “Harry & Meghan” drops.
Following years of allegations, counter-allegations, a juicy Oprah special and a seriously frosty family reunion earlier this year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are going all in on what Netflix is calling “an unprecedented and in-depth documentary series” where the US-based power couple “share the other side of their high-profile love story”.
But if the two official Netflix trailers are anything to go by, the US-based power couple is also set to throw some major bombs in the direction of Buckingham Palace and the House of Windsor.
In the first trailer, which is largely compiled of black and white images taken during private moments throughout the couple’s courtship, engagement and early days, Prince Harry tells the camera, “No one sees what’s happening behind closed doors… I had to do everything I could to protect my family.”
In the second trailer, the Duchess of Sussex is seen wiping back tears and Prince Harry announces, “No one knows the full truth; we know the full truth.”
From claims of racism and sexism, stories planted by palace staff to hinder Meghan’s popularity, the births of their children Archie and Lilibet, and their new life in California, it’s safe to guess that Meghan and Harry won’t be spending Christmas this year with King Charles and Prince William.
Here’s everything we know about “Harry & Meghan” and how to watch it:
When Can I Watch “Harry & Meghan” in Australia?
The first three episodes of “Harry & Meghan” will be available on Netflix Australia from Thursday 8 December. While Netflix hasn’t confirmed a release time, all new episodes and series generally drop at 12am Pacific Time (PT), meaning the episodes will be available to Australian viewers at 7pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) on Thursday 8 December.
The second set of episodes will be available to view on December 15.
What Will “Harry & Meghan” Cover?
Overseen by award-winning director Liz Garbus, Netflix says the series “explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution.”
Netflix has also promised “commentary from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly before about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press.”
So far, the British Royal Family has not responded to the series, but Meghan and Harry have come under fire after internet sleuths revealed that the paparazzi footage used in the trailers comes from red carpet events, the pursuit of other celebrities, and where relating to royal engagements has been misleadingly edited.
How Much Were Meghan and Harry Paid for the Series?
Though it’s never been formally confirmed, it’s widely believed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were paid USD$100 million by Netflix for a deal that includes the tell-all documentary as well as other content opportunities with the streaming giant.
