On Thursday January 13, Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet announced their separation after 16 long years together. The news took everyone by surprise, with fans being so used to the pair looking loved up during public appearances.
The former couple share two children together, 14-year-old Lola and 12-year-old Nakoa-Wolf. Their love story first began in 2004 and they eventually went on to marry in 2017.
Taking to Jason’s Instagram with a joint statement, they said: “We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding – and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring.
“And so, we share our family news, that we are parting ways in marriage.”
“We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy but so that as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty,” the statement read. “The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become… Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life & our Children, teaching our children what’s possible, Living the Prayer. May Love Prevail”
Let’s take a look back at their relationship timeline.
2004
The actors first crossed paths at a Los Angeles jazz club in 2004, where they were introduced by a mutual friend and shared a drink together. They soon began dating, with Bonet saying during an interview: “I can’t say it was full-on from the moment we saw each other, but we have been together from the day that we met.”
Momoa on the other hand admitted to having a crush on Bonet long before they had met. He had seen her on The Cosby Show during the ’80s and told James Corden on The Late Late Show that, “ever since I was like, eight years old and I saw her on the TV, I was like, ‘Mommy, I want that one.’”
2007
Momoa and Bonet had their first daughter together, Lola, in July 2007.
2008
The couple had their second child, son Nakoa-Wolf in December 2008.
2014
In 2014, the two starred in the thriller Road to Paloma together, a flick written and directed by Momoa. The movie focuses on Momoa’s character, who is a Native American being pursued by the FBI for killing his mother’s rapist. Bonet plays his love interest.
Speaking about his experience working alongside Bonet, Momoa previously said: “It’s an honour. In this business, we have to travel so far away from our families. We have two children, so if we can work together, that’s awesome.”
2017
The couple tied the knot in a secret wedding ceremony at their home in Topanga, California, in October 2017.
2020
In February 2020, Momoa and Bonet starred in a Super Bowl advert for online lender Rocket Mortgage. That same year, the actor posted a video on his YouTube channel where he surprised his wife by restoring the 1965 Ford Mustang she had since she was 17.
In the clip, he could be heard saying: “To be in this passenger’s seat with my wife here and surprise her and our babies in the back, riding in her first car from when she was 17? I’m excited to see her face.”
2021
Momoa celebrated his 42nd birthday in August 2021 and one of his well-wishers was Bonet’s ex-husband Lenny Kravitz.
Kravitz posted a picture of him and Momoa together accompanied by the caption: “Happy Birthday, Jason. I’m proud to call you my brother. One love. One family.”
2022
And sadly, this is where their love story comes to an end. Momoa and Bonet announced their split in January of 2022 saying: “The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other – to be who we are learning to become…”
