All The Key Takeaways From the First Married at First Sight Commitment Ceremony
While the dinner parties are no doubt the most explosive part of the Married at First Sight experiment, the commitment ceremonies also bring their fair share of drama.
For the most part, the couples sit uncomfortably, watching on as others either cosy up or fall apart in front of their very eyes. If that’s not enough, have a bad week and you’ll be called out by the three experts: John Aiken, Mel Schilling and Alessandra Rampolla.
Most excruciating, of course, is when one half of a couple decides to leave the experiment while the other opts to fight another day. It’s awkward TV and frankly, we cannot get enough.
The first week of the experiment saw the couples move in together and instead of being judged by the experts, they got to judge each other (thanks confessions week).
But on March 7, the first of the commitment ceremonies finally took place and to say we learned a lot about each pairing, would be an understatement.
Each week, we will update this article with key takeaways from the commitment ceremonies, so make sure you check back to see who stays and who leaves.
Patrick and Belinda
Apart from learning that Patrick can “speak Spanish”, we also learned that the pair have wonderful “chemistry” and “spark”. Belinda said that Patrick makes her “feel happy” and “secure”, so it’s no wonder that they decided to stay.
DECISION: STAY
Beth and Russell
Poor “Rusty” Russell. Put in the friendzone from day one. Beth didn’t give the poor man a chance, based on the fact they have “so many differences”. The experts urged the couple to try at least sleep in the same room, and while Russell was the one who chose to leave, Beth decided to “get the most out of the experience” and stay.
DECISION: STAY
Bec and Jake
Did anyone else want to hide under the covers during this awkward couch session? Watching Bec and Jake being on such different playing fields was a complete trainwreck — although, all was made right with the world when Bec said that she and her TV husband have very different definitions of “boring” — if that’s even a thing.
John, “exhausted” by the entire thing said: “There are two people on the couch in front of me. Only one of them right now is warm and empathic. Rebecca, it’s not you.” He called out her “unrelenting” standards and urged Bec to give her groom a go by realising he wasn’t her ex.
DECISION: STAY
Booka and Brett
Booka and Brett are turning out to be the second golden couple of the season — behind Patrick and Belinda of course, and because they’re just too perfect, their screentime was limited this week.
DECISION: STAY
James and Jo
James and Jo have had their ups and downs, particularly after Jo said she was more attracted to Jake than her own groom during confessions week, but ultimately, the pair decided to stay (“for now”).
DECISION: STAY
Bryce and Melissa
Oh boy, this week has been intense for Melissa and Bryce. After Bryce had told Melissa about cheating on his fiancee, Melissa had a surprise of her own — she had been sleeping on and off with her ex for 12 years. Bryce was very judgemental, which thankfully John called him out on. Ultimately, the pair think they’re happy, so decided to stay
DECISION: STAY
Jason and Alana
Two words: sexual chemistry. This is literally the only takeaway we got from Jason and Alana’s time on the couch. Oh and the fact that Jason is a very “generous” lover…
This pair is actually growing on us and we sincerely hope they make it.
DECISION: STAY
Cameron and Samantha
To be honest, the only reason Cameron chose to stay was for his epic storyline with Coco. During their time in front of the experts, Cameron said that he doesn’t have any issue talking to any of the other brides but with Samantha, it’s a struggle.
Even though this pairing needs to be over yesterday, they live to see another day.
DECISION: STAY
Sam and Coco
Holy moly guacamole. This was not a good time. Can we please spare a thought for anyone in the room while this travesty took place? While we’re placing zero judgement, it was incredibly uncomfortable to watch, and this relationship is ready to be done stat.
The best part was Coco standing up for women everywhere (“A woman’s worth is not dependent on her cup size!”), and wanting to get the hell out of there. Unfortunately for her, Sam decided to stay.
