For the most part, the summer 2020 movie season has been a casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Are there any movies still coming out this summer? Right now, there are still a handful of movies that have release dates scheduled for the typical summer months, although the earliest of those dates isn’t until mid-June. For the most part, most movies that were scheduled for this summer have either moved to later in the year or, in many cases, abandoned hope for a 2020 release and rescheduled for 2021.
While most of the summer movie season will likely be wiped out by the pandemic and its aftermath, fall and winter releases are still up in the air. Movie studios, obviously, are probably hoping for a return to the theaters by the end of the year; with summer blockbuster season being halted, it would be a second blow in a row to also lose the fall/winter season, where movies aiming for award season typically open. Only time will tell how the rest of 2020’s movie releases will pan out, but there will definitely be a lot of changes.
At the time of writing, approximately a dozen movies are still planning to open in the summer of 2020. The current release dates don’t start back up again until mid-June, and there are only one or two movies currently scheduled to open on each Friday, as opposed to the usual schedule that sees several movies competing each weekend. Subject to change, here’s the current list of movies that will attempt to keep Summer 2020 release dates:
- Kajillionaire: June 19
- King of Staten Island: June 19
- The Forever Purge: July 10
- Tenet: July 17
- Mulan: July 24
- Come Play: July 24
- The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run: July 31
- The Empty Man: Aug. 7
- Wonder Woman 1984: Aug. 14
- Bill & Ted Face the Music: Aug. 21
- The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard: Aug. 28
