Huge If True: Here’s Why We Think the Original Pokémon Games Are Coming to Nintendo Switch

Pokémon Day is coming up quick, and the Pokémon Company is celebrating with a special Pokemon Presents stream. That’s already exciting — is it time for news about “Pokémon Scarlet and Violet” DLC? — but the announcement video itself is what’s gotten fans really looking forward to the stream. See, the video contains some hints that we think are leading towards Nintendo announcing classic Pokémon Game Boy games for Switch.

Firstly, the video opens on an old CRT TV with a scroll of first-gen Pokémon like Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. Secondly, the video brings back the classic rendition of the Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow intro song. Finally, the stream is happening on February 27, which is the same day the very first Pokémon games were released in Japan.

Put the clues together, and it sure seems like the Pokémon Game Boy games are coming to Nintendo Switch.

That would fill a pocket monster-shaped hole in the line up of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games that came to Switch earlier this month. We did think it was strange that Nintendo would exclude some of the most iconic games of the era in the announcement, but maybe they were just saving them for the Pokemon Presents stream.

If it’s true, the Pokémon Game Boy games will be available for Nintendo Switch Online expansion pass holders. The pass costs $59.95/12 months and also gives you access to Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers, which you can redeem for a selection of discounted Switch games.

Even if we’re not on the money here, the stream will include 20-minutes worth of other exciting Pokémon news, so it’ll be worth tuning into.
