The Crown dominated at the Emmy Awards this year, which is why we cannot wait to see what’s in store for next season.
Netflix has slowly been releasing photos of the new cast, with fans having been treated to a glimpse of Princess Diana, Prince Charles and of course, Queen Elizabeth II.
Now, Variety has revealed Khalid Abdalla, best known for his role in The Kite Runner, has been cast as Dodi Al-Fayed, Diana’s lover who tragically died alongside her.
Khalid will star alongside Aussie actress Elizabeth Debicki in the fifth season of the show.
Mohammed Al-Fayed, Dodi’s father and former owner of Harrods will be played by Salim Daw.
Season 5 and 6 will be the final two seasons of the highly acclaimed show, and while the storyline has not been released, it is believed the drama will focus on the final months of Diana’s life.
The late Princess and Dodi began their relationship in the summer of 1997, causing an uproar in the media.
Tragically, both of them were killed in a car crash in Paris just a few months later.
Khalid does have a few challenges in front of him, because while the other actors have plenty of material to go off of when researching their characters, Dodi has reportedly never given a single interview in his life.
In seasons 3 and 4, Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor brilliant portrayed Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ tumultuous relationship.
The former went on to win an Emmy for his performance, while Emma received a nomination.
Dominic West will now be taking over the role of Charles, and we’re sure he’ll be equally convincing.
Imelda Staunton will reprise the role of Queen Elizabeth, one that was previously played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.
With season 4 having concluded in the late 1980s, season 5 is expected to take place throughout the ’90s, a decade that proved to be incredibly monumental for the royal family.
Not only did three of the Queen’s four children separate from their partners, but 1995 was the year Diana’s controversial interview with BBC’s Martin Bashir came to light.
The ’90s was the year Queen Elizabeth’s popularity plummeted, but whether we see that portrayed on The Crown is soon to be seen.
