After years of speculation, conflicting statements from its stars, and a heartwarming reunion at this year’s SAG Awards, fans of The Devil Wears Prada cult classic finally have the news they’ve been hoping for: 18 years later, a sequel is officially in the works.

Our hopes of a sequel were crushed last October when Anne Hathaway told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet, “There’s not going to be a sequel. It’s not gonna happen. We can’t do it.” More recently, in April 2024, when asked about the possibility of a sequel by V Magazine, she reiterated that it was “probably not” going to happen, though she was notably less definitive in shutting down the rumours.

“We all love each other and if somebody could come up with a way to do it, I think we’d all be crazy not to,” she said. “But there’s a huge difference in the world now with technology, and one of the things about that particular story is it was about producing a physical object. Now with so much being digital, it would just be very different. Maybe me, Stanley, Emily, Meryl, Dave Frankel, Patricia Field… we should just all do something else together. That’d be fun.”

What Will The Devil Wears Prada Sequel Be About?

It seems most of that iconic cast might reunite for a new film. According to reports, a sequel is in early stages of development, with the original screenwriter in discussions to pen the next chapter. The storyline is expected to follow Miranda Priestly navigating her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing, facing off against Emily Charlton, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars Priestly desperately needs.

Who Is Returning to The Devil Wears Prada Sequel?

Puck, which broke the news, also reported that both Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt have signed on to reprise their roles, with Wendy Finerman returning as producer. Deadline suggests David Frankel could return to direct, and hopes are high for Stanley Tucci, who expressed willingness to reprise his role as Nigel as recently as 2023.

All eyes are now on Anne Hathaway. If Andrea Sachs returns, will she still be the wide-eyed girl chasing her journalistic dreams, or will she have transitioned to a more lucrative career? One thing is certain: don’t expect her to be with Adrian Grenier’s Nate. Reports have made it clear that “Andy and Nate are definitely not together.” That much is settled.

So, fashion lovers, buckle up. It looks like we’re heading back to the runway, and it’s going to be fabulous.
