The Traitors is past the halfway mark now, and things are well and truly heating up, with twists and turns at every corner. After some especially traitorous behaviour from Nigel and Marielle last week, which saw fellow Traitors Angus and Claire banished from the game in quick succession, the Traitors were down to two. Or so they thought.
Last night, the Traitors were presented with a new task: to recruit a new, midseason Traitor. They chose Alex, a model and social media co-ordinator from South Australia who, until now, has been able to fly under the radar. But will she be able to remain out of the line of fire as she steps into her new role as a Traitor? We caught up with her to chat about all things Traitors as she enters her villain era.
Alex said that although she was “100% happy to be a Faithful” when host Rodger Corser selected the original Traitors, now that she’s had a taste of the Traitor life, they do indeed have a little more fun. Still, she was a little hesitant to take the plunge and become a Traitor.
“The moment that it happened, I was honestly kind of in shock!” she laughed over the phone, while chatting to POPSUGAR Australia. “I was like ‘oh my God, I don’t even know how to handle this, and I don’t know if I can handle this!’”
After weighing up the pros and cons, though, she soon decided that she was ready to embrace being a Traitor, and joined Nigel and Marielle in Traitor Towers.
“The pros, honestly, were that I wasn’t going to be murdered overnight!” she recalled. “I was like ‘Yes! Okay, I don’t have to stress about that anymore!’ And also, you know, I have a better chance of survival in the game.
“The cons were that I had no idea whether I was going to make a good Traitor or not; I didn’t know if I had it in me,” she explained, adding that a good Traitor is someone who is “good at manipulation — and manipulation is not a bad word here — and someone who’s good at using what they’ve got and is good at adapting to all situations”.
Joining the Traitors and seeing Nigel and Marielle unmask for the first time, Alex said, was “just like finding out the biggest piece of gossip EVER!”
“I was in shock,” she said, adding that “no one suspects those two”. Immediately, “so many things just lined up” in her mind about the way the game has unfolded so far.
“I was like ‘oh, we’re all really, really dumb, aren’t we!’” she recalled with a laugh.
Moving forward as a Traitor, Alex said that her strategy was to remain as cool, calm, and collected as possible — “just to lay low and not cause too much of a ruckus, and really observe!” — but of course, it was a task much easier said than done.
Calling it “almost an out of body experience” to sit at the breakfast table as a newly appointed Traitor, Alex said that she had to remind herself that “everything that happened in Traitor Towers doesn’t exist”. Rather, she had to “be normal”, not change anything, and go about her breakfast like her “normal, bubbly self”, and to keep things “vague”.
“My whole family says that I’m an open book but obviously, only knowing these people for a certain period of time was, what gave me comfort was that they don’t know when I’m lying!” she laughed.
Watching Nigel and Marielle interact with the Faithfuls, Alex said she soon realised that “they are both like wolves in sheeps’ clothing”.
“They are just so undetectable, and their subtle little pushes and pulls everywhere, I was so impressed at the game that they were playing, and equally impressed that they had been doing it for so long!” she said, adding that at times “it was a bit hard not to laugh” while watching them work their magic.
“As an ex-Faithful, I would’ve jumped on those bandwagons, and then now with this new title as a Traitor I was like ‘oh my gosh, I can’t believe how many fish were dangling right in front of me, and I took it!’” she explained.
As for how Alex will go as a Traitor remains to be seen, but there’s only one way to find out, and that’s to tune into The Traitors at 7.30pm, Sunday – Tuesdays, only on 10 and 10 Play on Demand.
