Always and Forever Will Probably Be Lara Jean and Peter's Final Appearance, Sorry!
To All the Boys: Always and Forever is this year’s biggest Valentine’s Day movie, but it’s also a little bittersweet. As far as we know, there won’t be a fourth movie in the hit Netflix movie series, so this year could be the last time we see Lara Jean and Peter and all their friends. The series isn’t ending because it’s not a hit, though – there’s actually a very simple explanation.
The whole To All the Boys series is based on a series of YA books by Jenny Han. There are three books in total in the series: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, P.S. I Still Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean. As you might notice, each of the books corresponds exactly to one of the movies, so at this point, once the third movie is out, there’s no more material to pull from for making movie adaptations. For the most part, this tends to be how it goes with movies and TV shows based on books: when the source material runs out, so does the screen version.
There are, of course, a few exceptions to the rule. For instance, Netflix’s other current YA romance movie series, The Kissing Booth, will release its third installment later this year, even though the book series only consists of two books. In that case, though, the movies aren’t quite as tightly tied to following the books perfectly; they combine original ideas with the plot points from the books. Since the To All the Boys series sticks to a “one book equals one movie” format, a continuation seems unlikely.
There have been no indications, from the cast and crew or from Netflix, that anyone has any intentions of continuing the series beyond this trilogy. While we’ll miss this adorable movie universe and these characters we’ve grown to love, we can’t wait to see what the talented cast do next – and, of course, how their stories end when To All the Boys: Always and Forever arrives on Netflix on Feb. 12!
