10 Underrated Netflix Original Shows to Add to Your Queue Now
At this point, Netflix’s originals library almost seems infinite. The streamer is continually churning out content, but only occasionally do projects like Stranger Things and Bridgerton get long-term momentum. That said, there are plenty of overlooked treasures buried beneath the service’s huge collection of originals. Whether you’re looking for a family drama like Gentefied or an emotional animated series like Tuca and Bertie, there’s definitely a hidden gem out there for you. We’ve pulled together a list of our favourite underrated original Netflix TV shows, so read ahead to learn all about the best series that might not be on your radar!
Gentefied
This underrated dramedy alternates between three Mexican-American cousins (J.J. Soria, Karrie Martin, and Carlos Santos) as they navigate their relationships and careers. Their lives all tie together as they help their immigrant grandfather run their family’s taco shop.
Tuca and Bertie
Tuca and Bertie isn’t quite a spinoff of Bojack Horseman, but it does share some of the animation’s stylistic and emotional sensibilities. Created by Bojack Horseman producer Lisa Hanawalt, the series follows a free-spirited toucan named Tuca (Tiffany Haddish) and her neurotic songbird roommate Bertie. While they’re very different, the 30-something birds manage to have plenty of fun adventures together.
Derry Girls
Derry Girls follows the lives of five teenagers who face very teenage problems while experiencing The Troubles in ’90s, a period of political conflict in Northern Ireland. One of its stars includes Nicola Coughlan, aka Penelope Featherington from Bridgerton, as the sensible Clare Devlin!
One Day at a Time
Based on the ’70s sitcom of the same name, the wholesome Netflix original follows the loving Cuban-American Alvarez family (plus their nosy landlord Schneider) as they navigate the ups and downs of life. The standout performance on the show is Rita Moreno as Lydia, or Elena and Max’s colorful abuelita, who can frequently be found dramatically emerging behind curtains.
American Vandal
The very silly American Vandal will give you your true-crime fix with plenty of comedic flair. Someone’s been doodling phallic symbols all over a local high school, so naturally, high schoolers Peter and Sam take it upon themselves to identify the culprit.

Living With Yourself
It’s double the Paul Rudd, so what is there not to love about it? Rudd plays Miles, a depressed copywriter who inadvertently gets a clone of himself when he goes to a facility for a mysterious treatment. It’s a deeply funny and thoughtful show that’s made up of eight bingeable half-hour episodes!
Dear White People
Dear White People was actually first a 2014 movie – the series is actually created by the same writer and director, Justin Simien. The show weaves through the lives of Black students at the prestigious (and predominantly white) Winchester University as they navigate college and racial identity.
Judd Apatow’s Love is a rom-com series with a dark twist. Paul Rust plays Gus, a needy and awkward man trying to find his footing in the TV industry, and Gillian Jacobs portrays Mickey, a troublemaking addict who works in radio. While opposites might attract, Gus and Mickey have a lot to sort out before they can become a functional couple in this emotionally raw romance show.
Our Planet
Narrated by David Attenborough, Our Planet is reminiscent of Planet Earth. It differs slightly in that it puts a stronger emphasis on the relationship between nature and human civilization, but it doesn’t sacrifice the beautiful camerawork at all.
I Am Not Okay With This
It and Sharp Objects star Sophia Lillis portrays Sydney Novak, a teen who discovers her telekinetic powers as she figures out her school life, family drama, and sexuality. While I Am Not Okay With This was cancelled after only one season, it made an impact as a cult favorite and critical darling.
