Take a Look Back at All of Blake Shelton's Relationships Over the Years
We couldn’t be happier for Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, who announced their engagement on Tuesday after five years of dating. It won’t be the first time down the aisle for either of them – in fact, for Shelton, this will actually be his third marriage! The country star turned reality show judge has had a couple of very public relationships since he first broke onto the scene almost 20 years ago, so it’s no surprise that the public has watched those ups and downs over the years, too. Keep reading for a full recap of Shelton’s love life and how he got to the point of sharing his and Stefani’s happy news with everyone!
Kaynette Williams
When Shelton was still just an up-and-coming country crooner, he married his high school sweetheart, Kaynette Williams, in 2003. The marriage was short-lived, and they divorced only three years later. A 2014 article from radio station 100.3 The Bull noted that Williams cited “inappropriate marital misconduct” as the reason for their divorce. The radio station also tracked down an interview Williams had given the National Enquirer a few years prior:
“After Blake and I split up, I moved from Tennessee back to Oklahoma, but then Blake and Miranda moved back there to a neighboring town, and it just felt like Oklahoma wasn’t big enough for all of us,” she reportedly told the Enquirer. She’s since remarried and stayed far away from the public eye.
Miranda Lambert
Lambert and Shelton famously first clicked during a performance together at the CMT 100 Greatest Duets Concert in 2005. Although the “falling in love while singing” is a Hallmark-worthy love story premise, the reality was a little messier: at the time, Shelton was still married to Williams.
“I knew he was married,” Lambert said on Dateline in 2011, as reported by E! News. “I had seen their wedding pictures in Country Weekly. I knew better, like, ‘this is off-limits.'” E! also reported Shelton’s similar comments, from a VH1 Behind the Music special: “I’ve never had that kind of experience with anybody. I was a married guy, you know? Looking back on that, I was falling in love with her, right there on stage.”
After Shelton’s divorce was finalized in 2006, he and Lambert took a little while to take their relationship public. They married in 2011 after nearly six years together. “He said [his vows] like he meant it. He wasn’t stumbling around or being funny. And Miranda really cried,” Lambert’s mother told People. Still, their long-distance relationship (while Shelton filmed The Voice) took its toll, and eventually, they filed for divorce in 2015.
“This is not the future we envisioned,” their reps told Us Weekly at the time. “And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”
Gwen Stefani
Once again, however, Shelton found love during a professional gig: he and Stefani met as judges on The Voice, although they weren’t particularly close at first, according to a Billboard interview with Shelton. Around the same time as Shelton’s divorce from Lambert, Stefani was splitting with her husband, Gavin Rossdale, and, as Shelton told Billboard, she helped him through the tough time.
“She didn’t tell me much, because we didn’t know each other at the time, but she said, ‘I’m going through something very similar to what you’re going through. I understand. And I hate it.’… Gwen saved my life. Who else on earth could understand going through a high-profile divorce from another musician? You can’t even imagine the similarities in our divorces.”
By November 2015, Stefani and Shelton confirmed they were dating. “Blake and Gwen have begun dating,” one source told People. “They’ve been supporting each other through a difficult time and they’re really happy together.” The singers’ reps confirmed the news as well.
The couple quickly became a fixture at music events and red carpets together, and they’ve been dating ever since. Stefani announced their engagement on Instagram on Oct. 27, with a sweet shot of the two together simply captioned “@blakeshelton yes please!” and a ring emoji.
