Matty Healy and his mum, Denise Welch, shared a sweet mother-son night out in London on 5 July. The pair were seen leaving the upmarket seafood restaurant J Sheekey, with The 1975 star and “Loose Women” panellist smiling for pictures together.
Healy – who has recently come under fire after being called out by Rina Sawayama at Glastonbury Festival – looked smart in an oversized V-neck jumper and pinstriped trousers, which he paired with brown boots. Meanwhile, his mum looked effortlessly stylish in a blue and white striped T-shirt, light wash jeans, and a dark wash denim jacket. The pair took the time for pictures, with Welch putting her arm around her eldest son in a sweet family moment.
Welch has been enjoying the spotlight from The 1975 fans recently by attending a number of the band’s shows. Despite Healy’s best pal Phoebe Bridgers, gaining attention in the audience at The 1975’s latest tour, as well as Taylor Swift’s surprise appearance at their O2 Arena show on 12 Jan. making headlines, it’s been Welch who has actually been making fans hearts burst.
While Welch is a recurring figure on primetime TV, she has been keeping mum about Healy’s rumoured relationship with Swift of late. While the pair have been friends for years, Welch didn’t comment on the ITV talk show about their relationship status, and it seems their fleeting romance has now ended, so we’ll be getting no insights on ITV’s “Loose Women”.
Welch, who shares Healy with her ex-husband, “Benidorm” actor Tim Healy, has been supporting her son on tour and been having a damn good time while doing it. Before the Swift-Healy rumours began, Welch was not about to pass up the opportunity of bagging a photo with the “Anti-Hero” singer back in January. (And neither should she, remember Stormzy’s Swift selfie mission after the MTV EMAs last year?) Welch posted the photo, among a carousel of others including a selfie with Charlie XCX, along with the caption, “Oh what a night at a sold out 02. So proud I can’t even begin!!” Welch also posted a snap of her with Florence Welch, leading some to speculate they are also related. (Spoiler alert: they’re not).
In addition to Welch’s own posts, fans have been sharing videos of her legendary presence. At The 1975’s Brighton show on 8 Jan., Welch stood in the production box in the centre of the arena as adoring fans cheered and clapped her attendance. One Twitter user, who posted the video, added the caption, “Denise Welch giving a Pope-esque address to The 1975 fans is frankly iconic behaviour.” Welch hilariously replied, “Don’t Cry for me Brighton”.
Welch also posted a video to her TikTok of her waving from a box like the Queen, adding “Thank you to my adoring fans!!!” More tweeted comments including, “someone said denise welch is the UK kris jenner”, while another commented on Healy’s more sexual on-stage antics, “i’d like to publicly apologise to denise welch and tim healy for making them watch their son suck my thumb last night.”
Last August, Welch revealed on an episode of “Loose Women” that The 1975’s song “She Lays Down” is written about her depression. “I told [Matt] when he was older that depression robbed me of the ability of love and I used to lay down on the bedroom floor and pray for the ability to love my children again,” she said, as per The Daily Mail.
In 2017, Healy checked into rehab after admitting he had a drug addiction. Welch, who also has 22-year-old actor son, Louis, said at the time, “I was very thrilled and proud that he told me about it – I was extremely proud of him for talking about it.” Now in recovery, the support of his family continues to shine. And we stan Welch for bringing June George from “Mean Girls” energy to The 1975 shows, and beyond. Keep reading to see more from Welch supporting her son.
