Zac Efron has done a lot in his career, but there’s one thing he seemingly can’t escape: the High School Musical franchise. As we all know, High School Musical has given us some truly iconic songs. From the unforgettable We’re All In This Together and Sharpay’s Bop to the Top, right down to High School Musical 3‘s The Boys are Back and I Want It All, there’s no shortage of bops in any of those films.
But the most superior of all? Troy Bolton’s Bet On It. You know, the one where his character goes on a journey of self-reflection, channelling his frustrations through dance while jumping, stomping, jazz hand-ing, and body rolling his way through Lava Springs Country Club’s golf course. Iconic. It’s one of his most memorable High School Musical scenes, and it turns out, it was completely off-the-cuff.
Zac Efron on His Bet on It Performance
Speaking recently to Netflix about his new film A Family Affair, the actor reminisced on some of his High School Musical numbers, like Start Of Something New. Revealing that he “still sings those songs in the shower”, Efron said he “invented” the choreography for that iconic High School Musical 2 scene.
“You know, when we shot that, we just had no ideas for what to do in the day,” he recalled. “Like, the director, he was just like, ‘Dude, we have no concept for this song, what do you wanna do?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know, we’re on a golf course’… we shot, I think the whole song, in three hours.”

Who would’ve thought that a three-hour improv scene would have such an effect on pop culture to this day? So many people have studied his dance, the lyrics, and have recreated the scene online over the years.
Directed by Kenny Ortega, High School Musical 2 is the second instalment of the Disney franchise, released after 2006’s High School Musical and before 2008’s High School Musical 3: Senior Year. The Disney Channel original movie follows the students of East High School as they work summer jobs at a country club, where they also prepare for a talent show performance.
Along with Efron, High School Musical 2 stars Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman.
