Here’s How “The Crown” Re-Created Iconic Princess Diana Moments For Season 5
In “The Crown” season five, released on Netflix on Nov. 9, Elizabeth Debicki takes on the role of Princess Diana. She’s the fourth person to portray “The People’s Princess” in recent years, after Kristen Stewart in 2021’s “Spencer,” Jeanna de Waal in Broadway’s “Diana” musical, and Emma Corrin in the fourth season of “The Crown,” released in 2020. Debicki’s turn as Diana comes months after the 25th anniversary of the princess’s death.
Debicki worked hard to master Diana’s mannerisms and voice. The show’s costume department re-created some of her most iconic looks for season five and even remixed clothes she was photographed in, also imagining outfits she might have worn during private moments.
The first episode of the season starts in 1991, with Diana, Prince Charles (Dominic West), Prince William (Senan West), and Prince Harry (Will Powell) going on a vacation in Italy, marketed to the press as a “second honeymoon.” But Diana and Charles don’t get along, with William stuck in the middle. The season ends in 1997, with the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong and the rise of Tony Blair (Bertie Carvel) as prime minister.
Diana died on Aug. 31, 1997, but viewers will have to wait for “The Crown”‘s sixth and final season to see how it reenacts the tragic event. Ahead, see side-by-sides of how Debicki’s Diana compares to how Diana appeared in real life.

In the first episode of the season, Diana and Charles take their family on a yacht vacation in Italy. In this photo, the foursome are photographed by paparazzi watching them during an excursion. William would have been 9 years old, while Harry would have been 7 years old.

In real life, Diana wore a similar floral shirt and sunglasses in photos with Charles at the Seville Expo in 1992.

During this scene, Diana heads to a hospital to visit patients and families and to see her friend Dr. James Colthurst (Oliver Chris). Colthurst ultimately delivered tapes of Diana talking about her life to her biographer Andrew Morton (Andrew Steele). For the scene, she wears a red jacket with a black collar.

It seems “The Crown” based Debicki’s costume in that scene on a real jacket Diana was often photographed wearing in the ’90s. In this picture from 1995, she wore it to visit the English National Ballet School. The photo also gives a good idea of how Diana was swamped by crowds during public events, just like in the show.

In the third episode of “The Crown,” titled “Mou Mou,” viewers learn about the life of Mohamed Al-Fayed, whose son Dodi would eventually become Diana’s lover. Dodi was also killed in the fatal 1997 car crash that ended Diana’s life.
At the end of the episode, Mohamed meets Diana for the first time at a horse-racing event, after he’s become the owner of Harrods department store. He wanted to sit next to the queen, but he is immediately charmed by the princess and introduces her to his son.

In real life, Mohamed and Diana were friends; here, they’re pictured together at a charity dinner at Harrods in 1996.
In 1997, Diana and her sons spent the summer on Mohamed’s yacht; the queen is shown discussing these summer plans at the end of “The Crown”‘s season five finale. It’s on that vacation that Diana and Dodi connected.

“The Crown” doesn’t show the event that Diana wore her “revenge dress” to in detail, though later in the season, Charles jokes with Diana about the concept. In the series, we see her getting out of a car and walking to an event.

In real life, Diana wore the iconic dress to a Vanity Fair party in June 1994. Just like in the show, it was the night a tell-all documentary about Charles aired, during which he admitted to being unfaithful to Diana. The little black dress was designed by Christina Stambolian, and the princess paired it with a pearl, sapphire, and diamond choker.

In episode seven, Charles and Diana, who are bitterly separated, reunite to drop off William for his first day at Eton College. Harry accompanies the family, too. In the show, Charles gets mad at Diana for “smothering” William, while Diana is apprehensive about leaving him. William was 13 when he started at the storied boarding school. The school is very close to Windsor Castle, and as the show depicts, William would often walk over to visit his grandmother, the queen.

Diana and Charles did drop off William for his first day at Eton alongside Prince Harry on Sept. 7, 1995. The show pretty faithfully re-created their outfits, though they changed the color of Charles’s tie. In photos from the day, Diana did help William figure out where to sign in the book, but it’s unclear from pictures if there was as much tension over the event as “The Crown” portrayed.
