Ahead of the holidays, Dwyane Wade shared a moving meditation on parenthood and what it means to love unconditionally. “Unconditional love, simply put, is love without strings attached. It’s love you offer freely,” Dwyane wrote in an Instagram post featuring two joyful photos of his 13-year-old daughter, Zaya Wade. “You don’t base it on what someone does for you in return. You simply love them and want nothing more than their happiness. This type of love, sometimes called compassionate or agape love.”

The love among Dwyane and Gabrielle Union’s blended family is palpable, and the high-profile parents have set an example with their unconditional support of Zaya, who came out as transgender earlier this year. “Waking up and watching you smile, watching you walk in your truth and live your life your way is one of the greatest gifts I’ve been able to experience in my life,” Dwyane wrote in a touching tribute for Zaya’s 13th birthday in May. “In a world where the color of your skin is deemed a threat you continue to be the bravest person I know and I’m gonna stand by your side until there isn’t anymore standing left to do.”
