Black boots always have been and will remain a closet staple. In any style — heeled or otherwise — they can dress up the most basic of t-shirts and leggings combos or dress down your formal office outfits. And while a good quality pair can cost upwards of $200, it’s a shoe worth opening up your wallet for, that’ll last you anywhere between two years to a decade (or longer).
The cost per wear is so fabulous that when we asked the POPSUGAR Australia team, what their favourite pair of black boots were, a few said that the style they owned was 5+ years old and no longer stocked by the brands. So instead, we looked for the closest possible remakes for you to shop, so you don’t miss out on the versatile goodness, plus a few newer styles that we think are worthy of investment.
Ahead, we’ve rounded up the team’s picks for the best black boots, from timeless Chelsea styles to fashionable heeled options.

I love my boots from Dune London because they are a classic and timeless Chelsea style, so you can’t really go wrong. My pair has lasted me over 7 years. I like that they are versatile enough to wear to work, out for a girls night, and in between seasons.

I bought this pair of Dr. Martens ($319.99) for the first-time last year and they’re a slay. Dress up, dress down — what’s not to like. The sales lady explained the different types of leather to me and I picked the one pair that I thought would give me the least blisters.

I bought a pair of black boots as part of a little wardrobe reset I treated myself to when I landed my job here. When it comes to my boots, I don’t want anything that has too much going on, so I love these for their minimal slip on style. They’ve got a slightly chunky look and the heel is a great height, while still being comfy. I love them for many reasons (one of which, admittedly, is the compliments I’ve received while wearing them). But honestly, I mainly love them for the nice little reminder they provide of a time when I felt really proud of myself and that I could do anything I set my mind to!
2023 Remake: Sandler Mason Boots (now $143.97, was $239.95)

Kitten heeled boots are my favourite, I’ve had mine for a few years now. I like how the shape of the toe is in between rounded and square, so they feel more timeless. The heels aren’t too high on the ones that I currently own, so it stays comfy even for days when I wear them for longer than expected.
2023 Remake: Wittner Lucca Black Leather Kitten Heel Ankle Boot ($300)

I’m a sucker for a knee-high boot, but a stiletto style can only get you so far, which is why I love these flat Tony Bianco boots ($389.95) — they’re comfortable and easy to style up or down, so it actually works out to be a decent cost per wear! Chuck some tights on in the winter for workwear appropriate styling, or with denim cutoffs in autumn/spring if you wanna embrace that yeehaw vibe. 10/10, would recommend.

I bought the Chunky Mid Heeled Chelsea Boots ($80) recently from ASOS and I’ve been wearing them a lot. I love that they are good for wide feet, because boots normally give me blisters. Plus I adore the shiny-ness of the top for a bit of extra pizzazz.

Black boots are my go-to shoes for most outfits when I’m not wearing sneakers. I have a habit of breaking shoes very quickly, but my original pair has lasted me for about six years now, with the same comfort and style that they had when I first got them. My balance is terrible when I’m wearing anything stilettoed, so the chunky heel has always given me the extra height I wanted, without impeding good support (which was especially helpful during my retail days).
2023 Remake: Alias Mae Alana Boots (now $249.95, as $299.95)
