Hoods Are on Red Carpets Everywhere, But Will They Be a Winter Trend?
On the list of trends we didn’t see coming in 2023, ‘hoods’ is pretty up there. But truthfully, we dig them.
While your mind might instantly go to your teenage-angst years of wearing your boyfriends’ oversized hoodie with a pair of over-the-knee socks and platform boots, the hoods on trend in 2023 couldn’t be further from teenage dirtbag chic, baby.
At a Berlin photo call for her latest film, “She Came to Me”, Anne Hathaway sported a head-to-toe Maison Alaia look, that featured a hood.
Looking like something out of a vintage Italian spy drama, Hathaway pulled off the effortlessly classy look, with help from her longtime stylist Erin Walsh — who paired her all-black hooded look with jewellery and accessories from Bulgari.
Meanwhile, on a red carpet in LA, Margot Robbie also donned a hooded Maison Alaia look, to the global premiere of her recent film “Babylon”.
Put together by stylist Kate Young, the look has been dubbed one of Robbie’s most daring red carpet fashion moments to date, with the actress often opting for modest, refined and feminine silhouettes.
This look, a MaisonAlaia wrap dress, complete with exposed mid-rift, a side train with Julia Fox-esque faux black hair fringing, and a matching hood — is definitely a step outside of her usual style portfolio.
The design of the hood — which is an extension of the cross-over panels on the bust — is reminiscent of Kylie Minogue’s iconic “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” music video look, which is nostalgically a disco meets Y2K style moment.
Non-binary Australian fashion influencer, Deni Todorovič, took the Kylie fever one step further, wearing a hooded Rick Owens top to the Sydney Mardi Gras opening night, where Minogue performed with her sister, Dannii Minogue.
And we don’t have to tell you how much Julia Fox loves a hood. The fashion muse / all round queen wore a leather hood as part of her iconic ass-less chaps moment, complete with an actual ponytail and Thom Browne “fox” bag, at a New York Fashion Week event earlier this month.
We’re just stating the facts — hoods are IN.
Similarly to other fashion trends that are becoming increasingly undeniable, such as low-rise pants, micro mini skirts and faux fur — they’re a refreshed and refined version of something that once was.
Previously, hoods have been seen as more of a costume trend, worn by the Kylie Minogues and the Madonnas of the world — they’re now less of a novelty and more of a high fashion choice.
And it makes sense. Styled to perfection, with timelessness and class at the forefront of both Robbie and Hathaway’s red carpet looks, a hood adds an element of mystique that is unsurpassed. It’s new, it’s fresh, it’s exciting. They look like something out of a European portrait — a member of the royal family, perhaps? A sultry nun? A patron saint?
There’s something biblical — but sexy — about a draped hood.
After a quick hunt for hooded pieces on the market in Australia right now, we’ve learnt that currently, they’re an expensive investment.
But don’t be disheartened. The beauty of designer fashion trends is that they always make their way down to the mainstream market at some point. Given their literal red carpet takeover, we’re predicting that hooded dresses, bodysuits and tops will find themselves in mainstream stores and big franchise brands in the coming months.
We’ll keep our eye out for local designers who bring out hooded pieces in their winter drops, that are slightly more affordable than designer brands. But, if you have an extra couple of grand, you should totally go for a shop at Maison Alaia.
