Opera gloves seemed to be the accessory of choice at the 2022 Met Gala. While you can expect celebrities to wear ornate jewellery, statement-making handbags, and one-of-a-kind gowns on the red carpet, several stars chose to accessorise their looks with this Old Hollywood staple as well. It was a fitting choice given the Gilded Glamour theme of this year’s gala, as gloves are one of the most recognisable symbols of glamour and were a fashion mainstay during the late 1800’s to early 1900’s.
On the red carpet, everyone from Olivia Rodrigo to Naomi Campbell styled their standout gowns with matching gloves. Rodrigo complemented her purple, Y2K-inspired Versace gown with a pair of sheer lavender opera gloves, a diamond necklace, dangling earrings, and a silver clutch. Campbell paired her black-embellished Burberry gown with matching gloves and a $6.6 million yellow-diamond necklace.
Edgier gloves created from fabrics like leather and chains also made an appearance, with stars like Kodi Smit-McPhee and Future rocking them. Smit-McPhee opted for a pair of red leather gloves designed by Bottega Veneta to go with his white tailored shirt, denim trousers, and black platform shoes. Future styled his sparkling gloves with an equally shimmering mask, a velvet-lapel tailcoat, and shorts.
One of the most celebrated looks of the night came courtesy of Blake Lively. Inspired by the Statue of Liberty, the cochair opted for copper-coloured gloves to complement her dress train, which switched to a gorgeous teal hue that symbolised the oxidisation of the monument.
