In the Grand Palais Éphémère, which was swathed entirely in tweed, Chanel’s Virginie Viard made a case for the fashion house‘s signature fabric. “I love working with it so much, I couldn’t live without it at Chanel,” Viard wrote in a booklet enclosed in the show tickets, which were also created in tweed.
For the fall 2022 collection, the tweed theme materialised in suiting separates, cheongsam-style coats, knee-high socks, and, of course, quilted bags. Viard imagined the Scottish fabric in fun, energetic shades like purple, burgundy, fuchsia, pink, and turquoise. The reference? Gabrielle Chanel’s walks through the Scottish countryside. “Devoting the entire collection to tweed is a tribute,” Viard continued in the show notes. “We followed the footsteps of Gabrielle Chanel along the River Tweed, to imagine tweeds in the colours of this landscape.”
Also inspired by Chanel’s countryside walks, rubber rain boots emerged as next season’s It shoes. The boots were rendered in calf and thigh length and offered in shades of olive and black. And due to the logo-emblazoned toes and glossy finish, the functional staple felt polished and decidedly high fashion. Those rainy-day must haves were showcased alongside other covetable items like shoulder bags, quilted AirPod cases, vintage-inspired necklaces, and ’80s chain belts.
The front row included tennis legend Venus Williams and model Soo Joo Park. Ahead, view the celebrities in attendance, and check out some looks from the collection.
