Florence Pugh Is Bringing the Peplum Back in a Red Corseted Gown and Puss in Boots Hat

She had a stellar 2022 when it came to red carpet style, and now Florence Pugh has wowed again with her first look of the year. The actor stepped out at the 43rd annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards in London on Sunday, 5 Feb. wearing a stunning red strapless gown complete with peplum, proving the divisive fashion detail is officially back.

The look, put together by longtime stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray, was from Robert Wun’s spring 2023 couture collection and was certainly an outfit to turn heads. The structured column gown was corsested at the waist before fanning out into a concertinaed peplum to add drama to the sleek silhouette. The peplum became popular in the early 2010s, but has been cause for debate among fashion fans ever since, yet Pugh proves it’s a chic addition when done right. The back was laced-up, while layers of gold necklaces, hoop earrings, and bangles from Tiffany & Co. were the perfect finishing touches.

The 27-year-old, who won the the Best Actress award for “The Wonder” at the event, further added theatrics to her look by taking inspiration from another of her films: “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”. She added a wide-brimmed red hat, with long-stemmed feather and floor-length red veil attached, reminiscent of the titular character’s attire in the animated films. In fact, Pugh even joked during her award acceptance speech, “this year I came dressed as a Tabasco bottle and wearing a Puss in Boots hat.”

Keeping to a retro Hollywood glamour feel, Alex Babsky added long lashes to winged eyeliner and a deep pink lip, while Hyungsun Ju swept her bob hair into a side parting with a structured wave and the ends tucked underneath.

Pugh attended the prestigious event with her brother, musician Toby Sebastian, and was spotted rubbing shoulders with a range of Oscar nominees. Pugh was laughing and joking with Cate Blanchett, who was wearing a voluminous puff sleeved suit, and Michelle Yeoh, wearing a chic mesh black coat dress, both of whom are nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Pugh was then seen with Paul Mescal, the surprise nominee for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Pugh, who celebrated her birthday on 3 Jan. and received lots of messages from her A-list friends, ended the year with some award-worthy looks. She was a Victoria Beckham muse in a white sheer frock in November, stunned in a pink Rodarte cape at the Indpendent Film Awards in December, and sparkled in gold Valentino sequins at the Fashion Awards afterparty. If this red hot look is anything to go by, Pugh’s style trajectory is continuing on a sharp incline for 2023. Read ahead to see all angles of her outfit.
