3 Ways to Style Sheer Dresses (for Any Occasion)

Sheer dresses have been hitting up runways and red carpets pretty consistently for a while now.

In a new era of fashion that celebrates the female form in all its iterations, sheerness lends itself to subtle sexiness, while also giving off that quintessential cool and effortless high-fashion energy.

While celebrities like Florence Pugh and Emily Ratajkowski have been sporting sheer designer dresses on red carpets and in the front row of high-profile fashion shows, we’ve also been seeing sheer dresses worn in a more every day way.

There’s something very unbothered ‘it’ girl about being able to pull off a sheer dress in a casual setting. Out on a grocery run, lunch with the gals, or even to a more toned-down event — a sheer dress styled right can give edgy glamour, without being too much.

We’ve put together three strong ways to style your favourite sheer dress.

Sheer Over Sheer

If you want to go sheer but don’t want it to be too exposing, wearing sheer over sheer can have a really interesting effect.

Particularly if the sheer pieces are patterned, embossed or embellished — layering a shirt, top or even skirt over (or under) a sheer dress, can make it less exposing and more casual, while not sacrificing the sultry vibes.

The above look from Melbourne-based brand Alpha60, shows a really successful styling of sheer over sheer. Matching their Maya Dress ($329) with their Farra Shirt ($259), they’re layering the same embossed pansy print and sheer black fabric over one-another, giving a casual but also more intricate look overall. Styled with a boot or even a sneaker, this would be a great outfit to take from the desk to dinner.

With an Oversized Blazer

Oversized blazers are a big trend right now. While you might immediately think of a blazer as simple outwear to wear with pants or a skirt, they can actually be a great layering tool — especially with something sheer underneath.

In the above TikTok video, stylist Kimberley Johnson videos herself trying on different jackets with a sheer lace dress.

She settles on a cream oversized blazer, which comes down just below her butt and adds a really nice layered silhouette and interesting dimensions to the outfit.

For this style, think of your blazer as a top. Choosing something that matches either your undergarments or is in the same colour family as the dress itself, will give the outfit a tonal and polished look.

And, like Johnson, knee high boots will give the bottom of your look some weight, to match the block colour of the blazer. An overall very chic vibe.

Full Nude

This is for the babes who feel a little bit extra spicy.

To give the illusion of full nude, while also being versatile for different environments — like work and fam events — is a true art form. But it can be done, in a super classy and elevated way.

Get yourself something like this Bellagio Crochet Midi Dress from Dazie ($40), or any dress that had a mid-level sheerness, a form-fitting maxi dress that is in nude or brown tones.

Then, just like stylist Erin Noël recommends in the above TikTok, layer it with a strapless nude slip like this B Free Mini Slip Dress ($59.95) underneath, or seamless high-waisted nude underwear and a matching bra.

This will give the nude illusion, but with full coverage. And then, layer with a trench over the top and pair with a tonal Mary Jane.
