Hair that’s stuck in the shower drain, but make it . . . sexy? This is the exact description that came to mind upon seeing Katy Perry’s skintight dress in her “When I’m Gone” music video, and before you dismiss shower-drain hair as decidedly unsexy, just hear me out. About 30 seconds into Katy’s latest video, she pops up to crush some dance choreography in a sheer one-shoulder minidress that appears to be covered in soaked strands of hair, somewhat mimicking her own wet hairstyle. There’s no denying Katy looks pretty incredible as she shows off the asymmetrical hemline and figure-hugging fit from all angles – and yes to those knee-high boots!
In reality, the dress is actually made of layered stockings – as in elastic hosiery, not the type you hang on your fireplace for Christmas – and silicone rubber to give that drenched, shiny effect. It was custom-made by up-and-coming fashion designer Joanna Prażmo, who incorporates unexpected materials like melted-down plastic grocery bags and packaging into one-of-a-kind pieces. Although stylist Tatiana Waterford selected a slew of other eye-catching outfits for Katy’s “When I’m Gone” video, including a purple corset-style Dolce & Gabbana bodysuit and chainmail Laurel DeWitt halter top, her slick dress is the undeniable highlight.
Between this look and Katy’s brown leather corset dress from the 2021 CMAs, it’s clear the pop star is heralding in a new style era, and we’re very much ready for it. Read ahead to take a closer look at the singer’s music video dress, which will hopefully help me conquer my fear of plucking discarded hair from the tub.
