An array of showstopping gowns were spotted at Kensington Palace, London, on 1 Aug. as stars attended the GRM Gala, a yearly celebration of Black excellence in the UK entertainment industry – and there was one particular ensemble that stole the show. TV presenter Maya Jama wowed in a stunning strapless textured dress by Sophie Couture, the brand from Azerbaijan designer Gunel Babayeva.
Jama’s dramatic look was emphasised by a slim-fitting strapless bustier that transitioned into a voluminous skirt complete with structured ruffles and thigh-high split. The textured fabric and sporadic feathers attached created a theatrical look that ensured she was front and centre for her style. Along with stylist Kyle De’Volle, she expertly the chose the perfect accompaniments for such a statement gown. Jama wore matching red heeled sandals and kept her décolletage bare to avoid overwhelming the gorgeous neckline and instead added a pair of diamond dangly earrings for a touch of sparkle. It was hard to ignore the only other piece of jewellery she wore. Yes, it’s rumoured that she is engaged to NBA player Ben Simmons, as we noticed an impressive ring sitting proudly on her finger.
The 27-year-old, who owns beauty brand MIJ Masks and co-presented the Brit Awards 2022, never disappoints when it comes to her hair and makeup, as she looked the epitome of sophistication. A classic sweep of winged black eyeliner and punchy red lip perfectly complimented the scarlet ensemble. Her glossy hair was given a side parting and swept into a sleek low bun for a fuss-free look. It’s great to see Jama back in the capital, as she now splits her time between London, New York, and California.
Despite being only the third year of this event, the GRM Gala attracted some big names. Alongside Jama, we saw Zeze Mills walk the red carpet in a red crochet dress with cutouts at the waist. The presenter topped the look off with elegant braids, silver jewellery, and brown barely there heeled sandals. YouTuber and Catfish UK host Nella Rose looked equally as glamorous in a black velvet dress with a lace bust and mesh sleeves. In true Rose style, she wasn’t without some incredible long, white nail extensions. We loved her half-up, half-down hairstyle, too.
