Emerging Designer Miss Sohee Is Reinventing Couture Fashion For a New Era
London-based fashion designer Sohee Park defines her womenswear brand Miss Sohee as “demi-couture”. After graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2020, her graduate collection was featured on the cover of LOVE magazine – and Park has since launched a successful fashion brand in the midst of the pandemic, while reinventing couture for a new generation.
Sohee Park graduated in the same CSM class as emerging designers Harris Reed and Yasmina Atta. Her graduate collection “The Girl In Full Bloom” featured voluminous demi-couture gowns with glam ’60s and gilded Hollywood references. The first star to embrace Park’s designs was Miley Cyrus for a performance on The Graham Norton Show in October 2020. But Miss Sohee truly took off in 2021 after being worn by Ariana Grande, Naomi Campbell on the cover of The Cut, Lisa from BLACKPINK, and Anitta at the 2021 MTV VMAs.
Park’s designs are informed by a rich tapestry of inspiration, from beaded outfits of the ’20s, to the opulence of the gilded age, and sexy, glam moments of the ’60s, combined with a jewel-toned, flora-and-fauna aesthetic. Miss Sohee’s second collection for autumn/winter 2021, “Haenyeo”, is inspired by Park’s memories of spending her childhood by the sea. “Haenyeo” is a Korean word that also means “sea woman”, and according to Park, “are old female divers that harvest shellfish in the island of Jeju in South Korea. They were my muses for this collection. Their ways of living, harmony with ocean, and motherhood truly touched me while creating this collection.”
