We’re convinced trenches will never go out of style.

Dating all the way back to 1851, British luxury clothing brand Aquascutum saw an opportunity for more refined rainwear, with the brand’s name actually translating to ‘water shield’ in Latin. And thus, it designed the first ever trench in fashion history.

Then along came Burberry in 1912, employed to make ‘trench’ coats that were literally designed to be worn in the trenches of the First World War. Naturally, these designs were adapted for women and as a fashion style that was both functional and extremely stylish.

It goes without saying — Burberry is still known for their iconic trench coats today.

Maxi in length with a tie around the waist, trench coats suit many different body types. For me — someone who has curves — I love that a trench will accentuate my waist and sit nicely over my boobs, without looking boxy. Often I shy away from overcoats because they make me look bulky. But trenches have always been the exception to that rule.

And thankfully, pretty much every notable mainstream Australian designer has their own version of a trench coat, which we saw throughout the recent Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Yes, that’s me! Wearing Bianca Spender on the runway at Melbourne Fashion Festival.

While Bianca Spender veered away from the classic trench material and opted for a pinstripe wool, other designers, like MNDATORY, opted for a more traditional colour, material and utility style.
