The Biggest Trends For Spring 2022 Are Looking a Lot Like They Did in 2005
New York’s runways kicked off a month-long Fashion Week, and in their wake, the beginning of the spring ’22 forecast is here. If you’ve been settling into the return of nostalgic fashion, you’ll be happy to learn that spring is also looking very 2000s inspired. Designers reimagined silhouettes beloved in the early aughts, giving us new ways to wear throwback favorites, like pedal pushers and dresses over pants. Ahead, we’re breaking down the biggest trends taking shape in real time, straight from the runways. Read on for the looks you’ll be seeing all over in spring 2022 – if not sooner.

Dresses Over Pants
This nostalgic styling trick is poised to take over 2022, thanks to the resurgence on the runway. There are really no rules to the look, save for throwing a dress over pants; there’s no limit to silhouettes, occasions, or styles. The effect varies with the style you select, whether you opt for a contemporary sheath (as seen here on the Proenza Schouler runway) or a floaty, bohemian-feeling tunic. We love a trend that’s open to interpretation.

The Y2K Halter
The tie-up halter styles that were big in the early aughts are here again. While the style is subtly nostalgic, it also conjures up effortlessly sexy vibes – the kind of style you might pack for a vacation – though with sleeves, the look gets a modern reimagining.

Pedal Pushers
Longer than Bermudas and shorter than capris, this pant silhouette hits at the shin and looks particularly cool worn relaxed and baggy, perhaps layered over high-waisted boxers like Rihanna would, or low-slung with sneakers. Fancier iterations come by way of Michael Kors Collection and Ganni, so perhaps you’ll even consider wearing the pedal pusher with a slingback for a future outdoor wedding.

Saturated Tie-Dye
Is it possible to transform tie-dye from season to season? The 2022 runways are proof that it sure is. While groovier paint splashes and swirls hail from the ’70s, this reintroduced Y2K fade has an ombré effect and a smoother transition from shade to shade. Prabal Gurung played up the saturation with sequins on his runway, while Alejandra Alonso Rojas showed it in a pajama-like silk and Retrofête took on denim.
