This New Australian Swimwear Brand Makes Cute Bathers Out of Recycled Ocean Plastics

This year, I’ve become a summer person. Having preferred the cold weather, winter fashion and food my whole life, I think that being stuck indoors with lockdowns on and off has turned me into a summer queen.
There’s nothing I am more excited about right now than a beach holiday in the coming months. I want to swim and sunbathe and drink spritz’s and tackle my long list of must-read books and then sunbathe some more.
But it always gets to this time of year and I start stressing about bathers… every gal needs a new pair of cute swimmers for summer!
Having a curvy body makes shopping for bathers pretty tough. I always opt for one-pieces, but this year is different. In an era of body positivity and aiming to be truly comfortable in our skin, it’s time for a bikini.
Something else at the forefront of my mind is sustainability. As consumers of literature and the media as well as pretty things, we’re (myself included) because more aware of how important sustainability is and I’m becoming more conscious of what I’m buying.
Thankfully, new brands are emerging with sustainability at the forefront. One of which is the just-launched Australian swimwear brand, Georgi Swimms.
Born out of the struggle to find something cute, with good coverage and that doesn’t f*ck with the environment, founder Mere Thompson began designing the swimwear from her home in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
“I could never seem to find styles that fit with just the right amount of coverage” she tells POPSUGAR Australia, “so I started designing my own.”
“I was also aware that I didn’t want to contribute to the problem, so I decided that if I were to create a swimwear line, that it would be made from 100% recycled materials.”
Well, she delivered. Dropping her first collection only weeks ago, Georgi Swimms swimwear is made from recycled lycra and nylon derived from ocean waste.
“We strive to make every element of the brand sustainable, from ocean plastics turned stunning fabrics, to our compostable mailers, recycled tissue paper and shipping labels.” Mere says.
Not only is this concept amazing—your bathers have essentially helped clean the ocean that you love and are about to swim in all summer long—but the designs are flattering, inclusive and look great on curvy bods (I bought some and they look cute AF).
The prints are hand-sketched, the colours are a mix of hot vax summer vibes and sultry beach babe and the material itself has high chlorine resistance, colour fastness and UPF50+ sun protection… which basically just means it’ll stand the test of time and also protect you from the sun. DREAMY!
“Each garment and bespoke Georgi Swimms print began as a simple hand sketch brand and to align with our mission statement ‘value ourselves, value each other, value the planet’,” says Mere.
“Creating timeless pieces that celebrate and accentuate every body was really important to me.”
