Willow Smith is in her pop-punk era, and her style has come along for the ride. Case in point: at Tuesday evening’s iHeartRadio Music Awards, the “Emo Girl” singer went full goth in an edgy, head-to-toe black ensemble. Styled by “wardrobe scientists” Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo, who also dressed Olivia Rodrigo at the event, Smith slipped into a double-breasted floor-length coat, a leather miniskirt, and over-the-knee buckle platform boots that easily upstaged the red carpet.
She accessorised with leather gloves and a spiked collar choker, all pieces from designer Yoon Ahn’s Ambush, pulled from the fall 2022 runway in Milan. Smith also added unique sculpted earrings by Freya Douglas Ferguson. A smoked black liner and semi-matte black lip, done by makeup artist Raoúl Alejandre, rounded out her gothic look.
Gothic and ’90s grunge fashion continues to resurface season after season, popularised recently by stars like Rihanna, Millie Bobby Brown, and Alexa Demie. Smith’s last red carpet appearance channelled the aesthetic with a white button-down, teeny low-rise pleated skirt, and combat boots with leg warmers.
Smith has been experimenting with the latest iteration of the trend as of late, sporting plaid skirts, chokers, band tees, chunky platforms and lots of leather regularly on her Instagram feed and at in-person events. Her cool, eclectic personal style is instantly recognisable. At the “King Richard” premiere back in November, the singer and her brother Jaden Smith wore matching outfits from MSFTSrep, Jaden’s clothing line.
