The First Story Details For God of War: Ragnarok Have Been Revealed and They’re Juicy

Kratos and Atreus in God of War: Ragnarok.

Sony has updated the store page for God of War: Ragnarok with a detailed story synopsis, giving us our first real idea of what we’ll be doing in the game.

“Fimbulwinter is well underway. Kratos and Atreus must journey to each of the Nine Realms in search of answers as Asgardian forces prepare for a prophesied battle that will end the world. Along the way they will explore stunning, mythical landscapes, and face fearsome enemies in the form of Norse gods and monsters. The threat of Ragnarök grows ever closer. Kratos and Atreus must choose between their own safety and the safety of the realms.”

That checks out, since we already knew the Norse gods Thor and Freya will be two of the game’s villains. In Norse mythology, Thor battled the serpent Jörmungandr, who Kratos and Atreus joined forces with in the previous God of War game. Perhaps that alliance is why Thor is fighting against them in Ragnarok. Freya will be seeking revenge after Kratos killed her son Baldur in the last game.

The God of War: Ragnarok story synopsis also gives us a sense of how big the game’s map will be — if it stretches across the Nine Realms, which include Asgard, Midgard and Jotunheim, it’s safe to assume that the game world is going to be chunky.

One final detail has been revealed so far: originally posted on Reddit and first spotted by The Gamer, one clever player has translated the runes on the back of the steelbook in the collector’s edition. It reads:

“Twilight Beckons. The Bear and Wolf travel the realms nine hoping to stop that which seems inevitable. Their bond will be tested, yet they must hold together for the good of all.”

The God of War: Ragnarok release date is November 9 for PS5 and PS4.
