LEGO Brawls is a team fighting game reminiscent of Super Smash Bros., but instead of Nintendo characters duking it out to be the last one standing, it’s LEGO minifigs that you can build yourself. From the look of the announcement trailer, LEGO Brawls combines the joy of playing with LEGO bricks with the chaotic fun of mashing buttons to push your opponents off a ledge or blast them out of an arena.
The main appeal of the game, and the thing really setting it apart from Smash Bros., is the ability to build your own LEGO character to play with. You unlock new cosmetics and accessories as you play, which you can use to customise your character with new outfits, weapons, hair and more. The announcement trailer shows off a few of the looks you can get for your minifig, including a full-body corn on the cob outfit, an astronaut suit, a shark costume and the classic LEGO look of mismatched head, body and legs.
LEGO Brawls will support a few different multiplayer modes, including online 4v4, party with friends, free for all and couch co-op. There’s even a battle royale game mode, because of course there is.
LEGO Brawls is coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X in “summer 2022,” which is winter for everyone in Australia, and pre-orders are open now. It doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but the Nintendo eStore says June 2022 — this might be a placeholder, or we might be getting it as early as next month. Technically, though, you can play the game today — it was originally released as a launch title for Apple Arcade, iPhone’s subscription service for mobile games. If you want to start practicing before the wider release next month, you can download it on the App Store here.
