A new trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet was released overnight and revealed a few details that have fans dying to play it. The games will be open world — even more so than Arceus and the wild area in Sword and Shield. It also sounds like there’ll be more to the story than climbing the ladder in gym challenges. “You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to,” says the game’s website.
But one detail that has people particularly excited is that the trailer confirmed Pokémon Scarlet and Violet multiplayer. And it won’t just be for special battles and trading, either — for the first time in the series, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will support multiplayer for up to four players, allowing them to explore the open world together.
“Along with series staples, such as trading and battling Pokémon, you will be able to explore the various locations of the region in these games with other players,” says the game’s website. “You can discover new Pokémon and explore unfamiliar areas with your friends and family, opening the door to an adventure more precious and fun than ever!”
It’s unclear yet whether Pokémon Scarlet and Violet multiplayer will let you play through the entire campaign with a friend or whether certain sections of the story will force you back into single player mode. But the trailer put a heavy emphasis on the multiplayer gameplay, so it’s expected to feature pretty heavily.
It also looks like you’ll be able to play with friends who have a different version of the game than you do — the trailer and screenshots on the website show players in the orange and white outfit of Scarlet adventuring with those in the purple and white outfit of Violet. That’s great news for friends or family who buy different versions in order to trade the exclusive Pokémon.
We still have lots of questions about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but from what we’ve seen so far, it looks like a truly open world, multiplayer Pokémon experience. And we can’t wait for this lifelong dream to come true!
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Release Date
