The new Saints Row came out last night and the reviews haven’t been kind.
The reboot famously toned down the Saints Row formula from the previous games, in which a black hole launcher and flying broomstick were totally normal items, and most reviews have pointed out that this might have been a mistake. PC Gamer said the “rebooted Saints Row could really do with a dubstep gun,” while IGN noted that “stripping the series of its more outlandish elements has laid this reboot’s design and technical inadequacies bare.”
It’s not all to do with the tone, though. Games Radar called out “character models and graphics that feel incredibly dated.”
While the game has its share of bugs, and some fans realise they’ve aged out of the classic Saints Row sense of humour, not all the criticism that’s been levelled at the game has been justified. Some fans are complaining that you can’t rob stores and shoot the shopkeeper like you could in previous games. But it’s hard to see why not being able to kill any and every NPC is a flaw, even in an open-world game like this.
On the other hand, the game is being praised for its accessibility options, which allow you to tailor a huge amount of the controls and difficulty settings to suit your needs.
Critics also agree that if you enjoyed the other games in the series, you’d probably enjoy the reboot — even if it isn’t your favourite.
Mostly, though, the reactions to the new Saints Row have been incredibly funny. People are sharing the best glitches they’ve come across as well as their disappointment on realising they’ve aged out of one of their favourite franchises. We’ve rounded them all up here for fun!
