All the Ways You Can Dress Up Like a Character From “Midsommar” For Halloween

If you’ve seen Ari Aster’s “Midsommar,” then you’re probably both scarred for life and wondering how you can dress up like the characters from the film for Halloween. Although the grisly A24 horror picture is definitely a terrifying flick, it also has some of the most vibrant, decorated, and gorgeous Halloween costume inspiration out there.
In a 2019 interview with Bustle, “Midsommar” costume designer Andrea Flesch explained the origin story behind the film’s wardrobe. “[Director] Ari knew that he wanted to have [the Hårga] in white, and also that we have to do close as possible to Swedish folk costumes,” she said. “But from there, I get to give my ideas . . . I found out that folklore in the whole world has something in common. So I started to search the whole world, what are the similarities in Swedish folk and other folk… and I found a lot. So the traditions were my idea, to use other countries’ folk customs.”
The costumes in “Midsommar” are brimming with colorful embroidery and hundreds of flowers, so if you’re thinking of going big for Halloween, this movie is a great choice. While creating the floral mountain that Dani (Florence Pugh) wears in the horror-drama took five people over a month to create, per Vanity Fair, you can make your own version that’s far less complicated.

"Midsommar" Costumes: The Villagers
- What to wear: For this “Midsommar” Halloween costume, you’ll need a white long-sleeve dress or shirt and pants (the billowier the sleeves are, the better). Accent the clothing with blue or red embroidery, which can be as simple as buying a piece that already includes that design (like a blue embroidered belt, which many of the villagers wear), or drawing it on yourself with a sharpie. Finish things off with a pair of white cloth sneakers, a rubber mallet (if you want to ~go there~), and a flower crown.

"Midsommar" Costumes: Maja
- What to wear: You’ll need a “Midsommar” dress in white with long, billowy sleeves. The embroidery on Maja’s dress is mainly done in the same color, with an intricate floral design on the chest of the garment. (You could sew on four or five strips of fabric to the top of the white dress, or draw on a similar design with markers!) Since Maja accents her main look with red, you’ll also need a red wig (if your hair isn’t red already) and red lipstick. Like the rest of the women in the village, Maja wears a flower crown at the end of the film, if you want to add that into your costume.

"Midsommar" Costumes: Dani
- What to wear: Dani has a few looks in the movie, but assuming you don’t want to dress in her grubby T-shirt and cargo pants, you’re going to need the same basic materials as the previous “Midsommar” costumes on this list – a pair of white cloth sneakers, a short-sleeved white dress decorated with floral embroidery (blue if you can find one or draw on it), and a white apron to tie around your waist. Toward the end of the film, her flower crown gets more and more elaborate, so the bigger the flowers, the better (you can also glue some fake ones onto a piece of bendable wire or pipe cleaners and attach it to the existing flower crown for that arch effect). She also wears a frilly white collar piece that’s dotted with bright flowers in primary colors, if you want to glue or sew some fake flowers on to a piece of white cloth and wrap it around your shoulders.

"Midsommar" Costumes: Dani
- What to wear: This is the big one! By the end of the film, Dani is essentially sitting inside a giant flower mountain. If you want to mimic this look, wear the same dress and sneakers mentioned in the previous slide (as well as the “Midsommar” flower crown). An easier way to make your own show-stopping flower dress, though, would be to buy a white cape and superglue or sew large fake flowers onto it, so that you’ll be able to pull it closed and appear covered. A less time-consuming option is to wear a cape made of flower-printed fabric, and then just dot a few fake flowers on it here and there for a 3D effect.

"Midsommar" Costumes: The Bear
- What to wear: Oh man, this poor bear. If you’re aiming for a couple’s costume, going as Dani and the bear is a pretty fun (if gruesome) choice, and you can do so as easily as snagging a bear onesie on Amazon. If you’d like to go the extra mile for your “Midsommar” bear suit costume, you can toss a flower crown on your head and create a cage-like apparatus to go around your waist (this could be done with pipe cleaners so you can still sit down while wearing it) as a nod to the bear when he’s seen in the cage at the start of the film. At the end of “Midsommar,” sadly, the bear is in far worse shape and gets cut open during a graphic autopsy. If you’re artsy enough to create a stomach, intestines, and heart with felt, you can safety pin those to your bear onesie, and voila!
