You can learn a lot about a culture through its traditional art forms, and Aboriginal art is no different. The ‘Dreamtime’ period, roughly 50,000 years ago, is a time Indigenous Australians believed the world was created. Aboriginal art is mostly based on stories and symbols from this time, handed down through generations.

While some artists take a more traditional route and use ancient art methods and classic symbolism, others put a modern twist on the ancient stories and ideas. They reminagine something old and make it relevant to today’s modern art world, all for you to enjoy in your home.

Whichever style you prefer; we have an artist for you. Here are three Aboriginal artists making art in Australia that you can purchase online now.

Tiarna Herczeg

Tiarna Herczeg is a proud Kuku Yalanji and Hungarian artist, who works out of a studio in Melbourne’s north, creating abstract artworks that are full of emotion and resemble maps.

Her work is impossible to look away from; the vibrant colours and effortlessly messy way they appear on the canvas is as calming as it is chaotic. A piece of her work would light up any room, elevating the space.

Stephen Hogarth

Family-owned Indigenous business Hogarth Arts has been bringing Indigenous art into mainstream Australian culture since 1996.
All pieces are handpainted by Stephen Hogarth (decedent from Gamilaroi), who “sits for hours creating amazing paintings and designs” according to their website.
Their work has been appreciated by many Australian brands, appearing for Brisbane Lions, Mission Australia, Deakin University, Lifeline Australia and Brisbane City Council.
You can also buy framed prints, cushions and throw rugs with artwork ranging from classic maps, to Dreamtime art and black and white prints of Country. The Fields Throw Blanket ($66.89) would add great texture and print to any lounge or bedroom.

Leah Cummins

Leah Cummins is a proud Mayi woman from NW QLD who produces beautiful tonal Aboriginal art.

Utilising modern colour palettes, Cummins celebrates classic Aboriginal art techniques and embraces a new colourwave, including some incredible pastels, neutrals and block pinks, with each painting.

This Kaampa Edition Three ($179) is just one example of her stunning work. She uses an earthy mix of colours, and it’s the perfect piece of art to add a splash of colour a neutral living space.
