Mother’s Day is quickly approaching (it’s on May 8), which means it’s time to start thinking about what you’re getting the mother figure in your life this year.
When it comes to shopping for my own mum, I often feel so overwhelmed by the desire to buy her something as special as she deserves, that I leave it to the last minute and end up buying something slightly lacklustre. But not this year.
This Mother’s Day, I plan on properly spoiling her (in part, to make up for said lacklustre presents of years prior).
Chic New Sunglasses
We’re firm believers that the best gifts are those that can be used every single day, which is why sunglasses are the perfect gift. So, making Mum’s day by gifting her a new pair is both thoughtful and practical. We suggest making a day of it and heading out for brunch (your treat) before stepping into Sunglass Hut to take their range of sunglasses for a test drive. Plus, it also works as a last-minute gift because you don’t need to sort it ahead of time because it was always supposed to be bought the day of (*wink wink*).
We have no doubt she’ll find a set of frames to suit her current style, particularly because Sunglass Hut has a huge range of shapes, styles, and colours to suit all mums. Luxury brands like Versace and Burberry are all stocked at Sunglass Hut, as is the latest Hailey Bieber X Vogue Eyewear collection. Find your closest Sunglass Hut here.
A Spa Voucher
Treating your mum to a day at the spa is a classic for a reason. Either send her off for a day of solitude or book yourself in and indulge in a day of quality time (and a pamper). We recommend choosing a spa inside a luxury hotel because while the prices don’t differ all too much from a dedicated day spa, you will usually also gain access to the amenities — like the pool and sauna — of the hotel without forking out for an overnight stay.
Warm and Fuzzy Slippers
Few things in this life spark as much joy as cosy slippers, so naturally, they’re what Mum deserves. The EMU Mayberry Slippers ($60) definitely make a statement, with a crossover slide design made from plush Australian sheepskin. These slippers are particularly great because they’ll keep your feet warm — but because of the open style, it won’t keep them too warm, you understand?
A Nice Mug
Drinking from a nice mug, and not one of the old, chipped cups that’s been tucked inside a kitchen cupboard for decades, is always a nicer experience. And really, the best Mother’s Day gifts will make Mum feel special all year round. We love the cute and quirky Sky Blue Cloud Mug ($70) by Voluptuary Ceramics.
Scalloped European Cushion Covers
A couple of Christmases ago, my mum requested a set of linen European cushions. Sadly, it was before Bed Threads launched the chic Scalloped-Edge Cushions ($120), but if they had been available then, these are what she would have received. Made from 100 per cent flax linen, these contrasting cushion covers add a stylish flair to any couch or bed, and that’s exactly why I’ll also be picking up a set for myself, immediately.
A Cookbook
Cookbooks are a great gift option for most people, but especially for someone who has a special cooking interest. One of my go-to is Ottolenghi Simple: A Cookbook ($29), which has a great mix of vegetarian and meat-focused dishes and (as the name suggests), the recipes are all quite easy.
A Sculptural Candle
Sculptural candles are undoubtedly having a moment right now, but one of the best things about shopping for them on Mother’s Day is that they can make a huge impact on any budget. We’re currently loving the Blobbies Telum Candle ($90) by XRJ Celebrations.
