It’s safe to say that all of us, in some way, are trying to make a difference. Whether it’s eating more sustainably, amplifying minority voices or even just trying to unlearn certain behaviours, for most of us the intention to do better by others and for others is there.
With so many people who need help, we could all be doing that little bit more right? From getting involved in grassroots community efforts to joining worldwide movements, there are lots of genuine causes out there, which can make it overwhelming to know where to start or how best to get involved. However, you don’t have to look too far — your community will always need extra help, so why not give assistance to the people and issues closest
to you first?
The Play For Purpose charity raffle has taken the stress out of figuring out where to start your giving-back journey. Play For Purpose is Australia’s trusted community raffle that connects supporters with over 500 charities and grassroots organisations around the country.
When you buy a raffle ticket, for just $10, you get to choose the cause your contribution helps support — and you’ll go into the draw to win amazing prizes, with the chance to take home a huge $250,000 first prize pack or one of 395 great prizes each raffle. Not a bad perk for simply doing good for your community. Play For Purpose has raised over $7 million for good causes since 2018 and announced 49,495 lucky prize winners. It really is a win-win.
Still, 500+ charities is a lot to comb through, so we’ve gone ahead and picked a few to help get you started and have you giving back faster:
DV Safe Phone saves lives. We don’t need to remind you that domestic violence is a serious problem in Australia. According to Domestic Violence NSW, 1 in 4 women has experienced physical or sexual violence by their ex or current partner. Therefore, getting that repeat assurance that victims of domestic violence are safe is an absolute must.
In 2020, DV Safe Phone founder, Ashton Wood, discovered how having access to a working mobile phone can be the difference between living with, or escaping from, a life sentence of domestic or family violence, or sexual abuse. DV Safe Phone is an amazing organisation that collects and repurposes old, donated mobile phones, providing them free of charge to over 210 registered agencies, safe houses and authorities who assist victims of domestic violence. These ‘safe phones’ are provided as part of an individual's ‘safe’ or ‘escape’ plan, giving them the ability to call for help in an emergency.
Supporting DV Safe Phone by purchasing a $10 raffle ticket means that you’re helping domestic violence victims around the country gain access to a phone that’s free from control from their abusers. It costs DV Safe Phone $75 for a technician to service a donated phone. Your $10 helps add a SIM card, charging cable and makes sure its safely distributed. Put simply, that $10 can save a life.
Is 2023 the year of looking after your mental health the way you deserve? We’re leading the charge in making sure mental health is treated as it should be, and LIVIN is taking it a step further by ensuring education around mental health is given as early as possible.
50 percent of all mental health conditions in adulthood emerge by age 14 and 75 percent by age 24. Not to mention that, since COVID, young Australians are experiencing mental distress at record numbers. LIVIN’s mission is to incorporate mental health into early education and awareness programs, to give young people a headstart on learning the importance of wellness through their LIVINWell initiative — empowering people to speak up because It Ain’t Weak To Speak® — that sees them travel to schools around the country.
LIVIN joined Play For Purpose in September 2022, with the goal to deliver 500 LIVINWell talks for young Australians in 2023. Considering just $20 means a school-aged child can get life-changing and even life-saving mental health education, purchasing a raffle ticket through Play For Purpose for just $10 truly helps give a young child knowledge that you might wish you’d have received at that age.
Love Your Sister was founded by The Secret Life of Us and Molly star, Samuel Johnson, with his sister Connie. Having suffered from terminal cancer, Connie dared Samuel to unicycle around the country in an effort to not only raise $1 million toward cancer research, but also to teach women around the country to be breast aware. Samuel took on the challenge, broke a world record, and helped raise $1.4 million.
Now, over a decade later, Love Your Sister has raised a colossal $16 million (and then some) toward cancer research, helping patients to receive precision medicine and have access to new treatment techniques to help beat this disease that realistically touches all of us in one way or another.
Love Your Sister have also been with Play For Purpose since the very first raffle opened in 2017. Since then, 25,000 people have supported the charity by buying a raffle ticket, and several of them have gone on to win that massive $250,000 prize pack. With support and a longstanding relationship like that, helping to advance cancer research through a raffle ticket purchase is the ultimate win-win.
